OK - please don't take this personally Zukomonitor, this is for all the newcomers.

    [Lecture]
The important thing is not what you need, but it is what you want. If you want to use your existing hardware and push it to the limits to gain as many points per day as you can, then that is one thing. If you want a quiet machine with a client that just chugs away and causes no problems, that is another. If you want the best PPD per watt (for those of us who pay for the electricty) then your requirements will be different again. If you are building a machine to get the most PPD from one box, then you will be after different clients and settings from someone who has to sleep in the same room!

Perhaps we should start with one of those flow-chart diagrams, which asks the questions and leads to suggestions for hardware, clients and settings. And remember, you can always change your mind - just finish the work unit before you do anything.

    [/Lecture]

Well done, that man! :thumb: Can I leave you to sort out the practicalities of how we communicate and so on? I don't think we want to create a long and difficult thread in public to be stickied. Perhaps get together a first draft, PM it to your support team, and take it from there. Or whatever :D

That is a good point :D

But this is what I mean Christopher - a tip/ foreword like that is whats needed in a sticky :D

Seeing as I dont know my ass from my elbow when it comes to folding, Im not sure what I want lol

For me personally its normally easier to go full on, dive right in so to speak.....

in this case, smp client first 24/7 (as long as I can still web browse) then GPU3 24/7 until the leccy bill comes lol probably wont do that much damage 1cpu and 1gpu???

I can always throttle back if need's be right?

you can use -smp 7 for bigadv's but you would need a higher OC. i'm running i7 920 @4GHz with -smp 7 and 2 GPU clients, and my tpf increases by ~4-5mins. as long as the tpf isn't any more than about 56mins you will make the deadline (running 24/7)

    To clarify
You need to have eight cores (or an Intel quad core with hyperthreading) before the server at Stanford will give you a -bigadv job. However you don't need to use them all (i.e. -smp 7) to run the job, so long as your machine can complete the job before the deadline.

Just wanted to say thanks to all in the thread esp Cavediver & Christopher :thumb:

Ive now got everything up and running and even overclocked! lol

PPD was around 8k and now after OC'ing around 10.5k

OC is 3.6ghz (4core turbo) and 4ghz on 2core turbo

    idle's 0.848v @ 1,4ghz.
    100% load (4core turbo) 3.6ghz @ 1.2v
    100% load (2core turbo) 4ghz @ 1.248v

    :D

I have "successfully" set up the SMP client for my CPU however, my PPD is still stuck at around 300. I have followed this thread exactly and the instructions from F@H but HFM.net is registering the same as before when I was running the normal client, what has gone wrong?

Sounds like you still have the classic client running. Could you post a screenshot of HFM.NET and the whole log file as it is now?

Ive just re-checked my guide and it looks like I forgot this bit in the config:

Additional client parameters []?enter any flags you want

you should put *-smp* in there, Its advised by F@H

    sorry

    Hope that sorts it :thumb:

oh and does changing from cpu client to smp mean you have to do 10WU's before bonus's etc

EDIT: The above log shows normal cpu client....... I dont know the procedure for changing clients but if its a picky one, did you delete everything to do with the classic cpu client ?
