Understanding Exposure: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Camera/dp/0817463003 Great for a technical look at how things work in terms of what the aperture does etc as well as explaining some general rules. Only when you understand the rules can you understand why breaking them or following them is a good thing accordingly
Also anything by Scott Kelby. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Photography-Book-Scott-Kelby/dp/032147404X/ref=pd_sim_b_1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Photography-Book-Step-Step/dp/0321524764/ref=pd_sim_b_5 Those 2 are great for beginers, if he wants something more advanced, then take a look at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Science-Introduction-Photographic-Lighting/dp/0240808193/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228212737&sr=8-4 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lighting-Dramatic-Portrait-Celebrity-Photography/dp/0817442278/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228212737&sr=8-6 If you want to go old skool, and he is really keen, then there is the 3 part series by Ansel Adams: the camera, the negative, and the print. All three are still very relevant, IMO. and always: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moment-Clicks-Photography-Secrets-Shooters/dp/0321544080/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228212737&sr=8-1
