Ok so when i first got into building my own computers and basic modding all those years ago there was a big emphasis on lapping your CPU coolers. Over the last few years i've been working litterally in the middle of nowhere and so while i've been able to generally keep up with whats going on i've just realised no one seems to 'lap' their coolers any more

Anyone out there still do this? if not why? is it because current coolers are up to a high enough standard, because people cant be bothered, because people found it didnt have an effect.... why?

I do sometimes. Generally, if I go air-cooled I get higher-end coolers anyways, and the stock surface is quite good already so I don't bother. I lap old waterblocks still though, because they'll be sitting in a box and getting nicked and scratched, so I take a few minutes to lap it decently.
