Pretty sure rage will be a pile of dated cack. "3rd person vehicle racing". I ****ing hate 3rd person vehicle racing!
Good man, Carmack, good to see a revered dev supporting the community.
Good to see someones releasing it- There are hardly any people my age that seem to know what 'source code' is, God knows where the next generation of developers are meant to come from!
Excellent news - although unlike the Q3A engine, I'm worried id Tech 4 will be too specific to be used for anything other than dark corrider shooters.
Unless someone develops a real-time light reflection/diffraction engine for it of course.
RAGE has being left in the dark. I haven't heard anything about this since it first made its appearance a few years back. What kind of game is it?
I'd like to see a re-make of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory using Doom 3 source code.
I personally have slated all the irrelevant Carmack press releases that have been on this site recently, but I have to admit that this is a worthy piece of news. It's good that some companies take the view that their game is not really an income earner anymore, but could instead produce a greater benefit to the community at large by releasing its code for people to learn and create from.
Rage is a game where u have to go through towns and residential areas looking for chavs and kill them. It also has porn elements as well because it has naked women. It also has unusual enemies like the spoon people (spoons with weapons).
A remake of a vintage game using a vintage engine?
You made me snigger out loud in the office damn you!
Seriously though, it seems to be a cross between Borderlands, Fallout 3 and Doom 3, with a bit of Motorstorm thrown in. More FPS than RPG it would appear too.
In terms of freely available engines, the Doom 3 engine I imagine would be the most up-to-date available. Plus, with today's PCs and a bit of tweaking, it has a huge amount of potential - Brink looked pretty good for an eight year old engine.
Yup, agree. Borderlands/Fallout 3. I hope the driving part has 1st person view also or else I will give it a miss.
Yeah why not, I have very fond memories of ET, I'm sure it could be given a lick of paint and some real time lighting.
I'd like to see remake of Quake and Q3A and Doom and Doom 2 and first Castle Wolfenstein using said engine.
I'd like to see said remakes on the Unreal SDK engine DX11
Good old Carmack.
Can't wait to see what people are going to be able to create with this.
The previews on Eurogamer have all been quite positive. Old school ID shooter, great level design, great action, good range of weapons with mods and different ammo types and you can carry them all at the same time too. The driving parts are apparently quite good and complement the rest of the gamer quite well.
I'm looking forward to it.
They could do a Remake of Daikatana (Yes, I was the person who liked it ).
Maybe then I could actually finish the game without it crashing inexorably.
