Anyone seen any empty iMAC cases out there ? (sphere with a monitor on top) Would be a nice mod to throw in a mini-itx mobo in one of those cases I dont know how the plug on the mac monitor works, but is it the same as VGA plugs ? havent used MAC since i was 12 (im 19 now, turned 19 january 22th) The DVD burner has to go, i know that. Have anyone seen this type of mod on the inet ?
Don't think anyone's done this mod just yet... the only places that I can think of to get a shell would be ebay... but what you really want is one where some parts of the mobo etc are'nt working but still has the LCD screen.... I would also assume that they would wire the monitor directly to the mobo/gfx card as it's not likely to ever have an external monitor nor is it ever going to change... but you could probably work around that... Why not email Apple and see if they have anything they can't use and would be willing to sell/give to you... worth a go... also you might try places like pc world... they usually have a bargain run for things that don't work entirely perfect... hope you get on well with this... it would be quite nice to see this done...
Some1 did it for the last cpl modding competition U wont be able to buy the shell direct from apple unless ure very lucky
the mac monitor would require a couple of adapters as it uses a different plug setup... also you'd need a wicked small m-itx board... as they're pretty well crammed and not too big...
From Linear's original thread he posted this link over to pheaton forums and thier pics of the cpl entries. Specifically, here are the pictures that should get your juices flowing: http://www.planetcasemod.com/CPLWinter2002/mac1.JPG http://www.planetcasemod.com/CPLWinter2002/mac2.JPG http://www.planetcasemod.com/CPLWinter2002/mac3.JPG Long time stranger Gordy wins the prize for remembering this one!
I was planning on doing a mod like this one too.. but I eventually gave up looking for an emply Imac case.. If you go to a Apple Store, try asking one of the employees to order the parts for you. That might work (though it would be expensive)
I believe he was referring to this style of iMac.... which is the newer ones (TFT mounted on adjuestable arm ontop of semi-spherical base) and like I said..... they're very cramped, and the TFT has a funny internal connection
The internal connection carrys the vid' part of ADC AFIK. This is from me, a hardened mac user who's replaced the hard drive, there is very little space in there for anything, it's amazing apple managed to fit in what the have
the "imac mod" on http://www.pheatonforums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1340 is not an iMac case it's the shell of a 17" Apple CRT monitor...
Good luck even with Ebay man. I've tried finding EVERYTHING mac related on ebay. Too many ponzi scheme bids though. Never able to get anywhere anymore.
you could try a micro MB and use an AGP riaser cable (PCB with a ribon cable) and mount the card horizontaly on a shelf inside the shell to use the i think its DVI output which is what macs use. iv seen one of the new IMACs and the base was bigger then i expected im sure it could be done. try writing to mac and telling them that you would like to purchase a case for educational puposes, because you are teaching a cvlass in the fundimentals of computers, (the differences between Macs/PCs, the differences in hardware and layout) that kind of thing. only thing that would be a problem is using the display cuz im sure they use a different conection type, i know they used to. but if they send you and EMPTY case (without the screen) then just get a TFT strip it down and put that in the case. I NEED SLEEP
hehe. nice but i think i'll go for making a plexisphere and use a m-itx mobo in it, and clash a 17"WS LCD(or whatever) on top of it
Here's what the inside of a new imac looks like. As you can see there's not much room inside, but a mini-itx board would fit. Before you build your own i-mac case, you should try sending an inquiry to these people. They may be able to order the parts for you.
Apple only deal with authorised repairers, I know as I work at a reseller and we cannot get parts to fix things or do much at all to the newer macs. we manage HDDs, CDROMS, RAM, cards etc but never "proper" repairs I'll try and get the number for our repairers for you though I am not sure they are allowed to just sell parts
