I've got an old PC that I want to install windows 98 on (p166, 32mb ram) but it doesnt have a cd-rom dirve and there isnt space in the case to install one. I dont want to piss about plugging in the cd-rom drive and hanging it over the side like I have done in the past and thought it would be nice to try and install windows over the network. It has a 10/100 network card in, which I have plugged into my hub but how do I get DOS to recognise the network?
there's a way to do it.... check on the networking forum to see about setting dos to recognize a network
There is a way, it involves setting the bios to boot from the network and loads of other things... trust me when I say it's easier to just install it with the CDROM hanging over the side routine... I'll move this into the Networking forum for you...You will probably get a quicker response there.
a pent 166 will not be able to run the bios feature or booting ove network i mean the first comps that could do that where slot 1s
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/management/remotesteps.asp#heading12 have a look there, It can be done, we have done it at work on some old 166 PCs!!!!
trust me unless the mobo can handle it like a celly 166 slot 1 mobo then i havent seen a 166 do it b4
Not sure whats inside our 166s at work, they had to have their BIOS flashed but the boot over LAN was available... I cant be bothered to go down to the remote site to see what the machines are... The point is, it's easier to hook up a CDrom for the install...
