I'm currently putting together a 1 year old PC which has been lying about unused, due to problems upgrading. When I was upgrading it last year, there was no video output, but all the fans (CPU, GPU and case) span up properly. Being at uni, there weren't many people with PCs, less who were willing to test my components in there PC. Recently I wanted to try to make it work again, and when setting it up, with the bare minimum attached (CPU+fan, RAM, graphics card & PSU) it wouldn't output video, testing the RAM individually lead to the discovery that one stick of RAM was dead, as it would POST with one stick of RAM. I checked in the BIOS and the CPU was running cool (~20C). I then put the rest of the components together and mounted in the PC, then I didn't get a video output. I checked all the cables, and they all seemed well inserted, but I removed and reinserted some cables, then it worked again. But then without touching anything inside the case, restarting leads to no video output again. This keeps happening, sometimes leaving it for a bit will allow it to work, sometimes not, it's just temporamental! Does anyone have any idea about what could cause these kinds of problems in a PC? Or a suggested course of action? Unfortunately I have no access to another PC to test components individually Many Thanks Nick
It sounds like a lose connection somewhere or a broken wire. Maybe start with the monitor cable. Do you use the monitor for anything else? Maybe try a tv instead, see if that works.
The monitor is normally attached to my xbox, so I know it works. I'll have to try using a different cable when I get in. Would you say that the more likely source of the problem is the cable, or the port itself? I'm currently at work, so can't test right away. Any other suggestions? The more the merrier Cheers
