    my girlfriend has a problem with her internet connection; email and general web browsing are working normally but when she attemps to sign in to anything i.e. bank or ebay etc. she gets a general error message.
    is this something to do with cookie settings or something in internet options?

    thanks,

    john.

    From your post I will assume she is using Internet Explorer.
    It does sound very much like she needs to enable cookies.

    To do this :
    * Go to the "Tools" menu.
    * Select "Options".
    * Select the "Privacy" icon in the left panel.
    * Check the box corresponding to "Allow sites to set cookies".
    * Click "OK" to save changes.

    no, all the settings in internet options are normal (i checked them against my settings) - still the same problem!
    it is IE7 by the way.

    i'm thinking about reinstalling IE7?

    also, she uses the terrible norton internet security software which is worrying me but disabling auto-protect doesn't resolve the problem.

    you could always try resetting your explorer settings.. in IE7, to tools > internet options > "advanced" tab... at the bottom, there is a reset button that will reset all the settings in IE7... homepage, cookie settings, security settings, etc... it deletes all temp files, disables all your addons.. basically sets IE7 to its original "first time use" state...

    try that

    thanks krimson but i tried that and it still didn't work, however i got her to download firefox and everything works fine from that browser - i think she'll stick with firefox for now but a format & re-install of everything is really required as it's the worst kept & slowest computer i've ever seen!
