My work blocks DNS addresses. I believe I can get around this using IP addresses. (For example, instead of typing forums.overclockers.co.uk I type 91.151.218.11) It works for most sites. forums.bit-tech.net (91.198.165.69) doesn't work.... Help?
Actively subverting the controls your employer has placed on its IT system is a quick and easy way to get fired. I would consider what you're doing very carefully.
Well, this is the thing. I have my smart phone, and I'm allowed to use it pretty much whenever. But desktop browsing is much nicer. But also, we get given quota time etc. 80 minutes a day. This comes up on the majority of websites (except permablocks like porn, gambling, etc.) as a little button we can click. We can use the quota time in blocks of 10 minutes at a time. So, if I click a link to one site and click "use quota time". Even I've actually only used 30/40 seconds of actual time, 10 minutes of quota is gone. This is how I'm replying now... xD Any solutions other than smartphone? I know I could track my exact usage and only use sites for certain amounts of time... But my line of work is very varied in that, one day I'll be on my feet for 9 hours, not a single rest. The next day I'll only have one hour of work to do, and then the other 8 hours - I'll be sitting around waiting for stuff to do... 80 minutes isn't enough to cover me
Use the quota time better? If you're allowed break time to do stuff like that, then put aside ten minutes to check your websites, do it, then carry on working. Makes it much easier to use that time effectively.
The filtering/quota software is there for a reason.. the company is legally responsible for what happens on its internet connection and bypassing the software will put you on the wrong end of your company use policy. You'll get busted eventually and the company will fire you. It's not worth the risk.
Okay, at the end of the day - yes, that makes most sense. Managing the time better, that is. Problem solved I think?
Bit-tech doesn't work via IP as it's a shared server so it uses host headers to work out which site it's going to.
At my work we have filtering on youtube, facebook etc. Bearing in mind we spend half our time on VPN's we could easily get around this but it's there for a reason. It's up to us in the office to respect the rules put in place and browse site on our personal devices on our lunch break.
Someone thought watching tennis on YouTube when he had work to do was good idea. This is before I joined.
Same where I work too, no reason for anyone outside of the teams that need proxy bypass to have the option.
And maybe the threat of disciplinary action (also using someone else's gateway to steer all your traffic through is a bit naughty if you haven't asked them - as im guessing your vpn's out of your office are to client sites?) I have no filtering, but then I don't really often hang about in my office much as I'm forever going around my sites. Quite alot of those have some kind of filtering in place, but I am the network admin so that still doesnt affect me.
I wouldn't be too fussed about this "quota time" if I only had a small amount of time to use it in. I sometimes I have to sit around for 3 hours at a time finding something to do before I get any actual work to do. But other days it's non-stop and I can't even take my lunch break... It never used to be filtered. It's only been filtered since an incident like Votick's youtube/tennis one occurred. Woman who works here decided to spend all her time surfing the web instead of working... And then 'bam' internet is filtered....
Speak to your superiors in that case? I'm sure there'd be a way to enforce an exception case, when granted permission from a network admin/or equivalent.
I lost my all day net privilages for over use, I found way round that and got in trouble and they said they're gonna too look at all my net activity and if anything is dodgey...... Now I just use my phone and if desperate for screen browsing I tether my phone and unhook the network cable TBH not worth the risk If I'm bored or know it's a quite day I take in PDF documents to read and study
I've spoken to them before. Apparently me sitting around all day isn't a problem to them. If I can't find something to do then it's my problem. I sit at a desk in a room with one other person. It's not exactly a space where I can go re-organising stuff, and I'm not allowed to play in other departments matters either. Supervisors are really nice / cool people! They just don't seem to understand the predicament...
