It's still not plastic. And it's still irrelevant.

I don't mean any offense, but if you try not to be so quick to make fun of Apple, maybe you won't look like a total biased fanboy in the future, deal?

(I think that's what you meant by that sentance, it was rather unintelligible)

    pol·y·car·bon·ate ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pl-kärb-nt)
    n.
Any of a family of thermoplastics characterized by high-impact strength, light weight, and flexibility, and used as a shatter-resistant substitute for glass.

apple has pretty products, but style does not equal substance, take for instance:
    1) the titanium (i believe, but it might have been another metal) notebooks that had embedded wi-fi inside the case... inside the metal case (think of a faraday cage that insulates against radio signals)

    2) the computers that overheat as a rule, because the designers thought a cool cube would look cool, or a passively cooled all-in-one (iMac), but all get hot enough to be uncomfortable to the touch after a while

    3) and finally (that i can think of, since i don't know much about all mac products) the scratchy mcscratch-scratch nano screens. if they'd've used the kind of polycarbonate that my glasses have, it could be a selling point that it was nearly scratch proof!, or they could have used a normal polycarbonate and just solved the problem adequately, but instead they used a cheap plastic that scratches in the presence of oxygen (not really, but pretty close).

i agree that the last post kinda didn't make sense, i was trying to work in something about how hot dogs don't actually have any dog in them (hopefully), but i couldn't really figure out how to, so i scrapped the idea but forgot to erase the text. my bad, i've edited it to make sense now, i had carts at work for 8 hours today, where you bring in carts from the parking lot into the corrals at the front of the store, i'm so sore, and my typings gone to crap.

Errr...I'm_Not_A_Monster, I'm not an Apple fanboy and even I can see that you're going off-topic.
Even polycarbonate will scratch when subjected to pockets full of coins, keys and other objects and to get a decent thickness would ruin the nano!
I've got a nano simply because it's compact with the right amount of memory and I'm sure a lot of other people are thinking the same thing.

Interesting how any debate about an apple product quickly turns into a racism-like debate where both sides digress.

The bottom line is the plastic is itchy...and Apple prolly should have done something pre-release to help the situation. Likewise on the cases where ppl's nano's have self-destructing LCDs. Looks isolated since some ppl (like the Ars test) have no problems, but then some crack from being slid into a pocket.

Think I'll stick with the conventional ipod or a shuffler for now.

i still recon things like this need love, take my spv c500 it is the best phone ive owned, all the usual damage places are metal but the screen suffers from scratches and i cant see it in daylight, i think this isnt just apple related, every company fecks things at some stage and gen 2 nano's may have this fixed.....maybe.....Well point here is protect the screen... get some kind of screen protection film, selotape if your a real cheapass and this would be fixed. u spend the 190 on an ipod but a pack of screen defenders is 10 for 10! Cut one of them in half for the fact 1 protector will fit a nano screen 2-3 times over and jobs a goodun :D icarus

but you shouldn't need to buy extra stuff to protect your gear for something like this, my friend has one of those and he treats it better than his baby(although i guess even a careless nano owner would have a hard time dropping one on it's "head") :) . he doesn't even keep it in a jeans pocket, he has a fleece jacket that has pockets, and he has a special one for his nano. how can anyone defend the quality of a product when i scratches from clean fleece? whats next? the plastic and styrofoam destroy the next gen of nanos before we even get them?

some things are just too fragile, makes me think they are using props in the apple commercials where people are dancing and holding one in their hand!!!

"APPLE HAS admitted there are two flaws connected to the scratched or broken screens on its new super soaraway iPod Nanos."

apparently is effects about 1% of nanos, which i think is pretty damn high!!
looks like i'll be holding off getting one til this is fixed!

Just to throw my opinion in, I have a 2 year old cell phone with a LCD display on the outside. I keep it in my pocket, and sometimes in my backpack. I have for the past 2 years. I see no visible scratches on the screen. (the paint on the plastic is a bit sratched here and there, with heavy scratches around the edge of the phone, but none on the screen.)

I don't own an ipod, so I won't complain about their quality. (I don't listen to music away from the car or computer that often.) But I will say scratch resistant plastic/design is not impossible, nor does it add excessive thickness.
