Is it a good idea to gently overclock a q6600 on stock cooling?

my new (and first) build (what do you think!?):

    q6600 (g0 stepping)
    abit ip35 pro
    radeon 2900pro
    750w silencer power supply
    2gb crucial ballistix ram
    antec p182

so.. ive never overclocked anything before.. i realise i need to go into the bios and raise the fsb by 5 or 10 each time and then run ptime 95 to test stability...

my cpu idles around 27 and goes to around 47 under load.. is the cooling in the case decent enough to provide a decent overclock?
(ive put another aux fan to suck air into the front of the case)

    thanks!

I can only answer for my part. I don't have a stock cooler, but same case, mobo (ish) and cpu. I overclocked to about 3ghz and like yourself hit high 40's when overclocked (didn't change much from standard to clocked).

I'd say give it a go, but maybe someone else knows better

with a system like that it's always a good idea to spend a few bux on a decent cooler to protect your hardware.
Coolers like the AC freezer pro 7 (i use it on my OCed c2d 4300) are not expensive at all, and they are a really good investment if you concider the amount of money you loose replacing that sweet sweet q6600 :thumb:

that said, if you don't OC too much, and keep things stable, you'll bee fine with the stock cooler.

You should be OK as long as you do not raise the voltage to the CPU

Just raise the FSB in a few small steps and see what CPU temperatures you get

Yea you should be ok with mild overclocks, see how far you can go. I've run my e6300 at 70 before when seriously overclocking it, still worked fine / didn't blow up.

I have mine stably clocked just below the 3 ghz mark at 2,97. :geek:

Mind you, that is a 60% overclock from it's default 1,86GHz speed :eeek:

Q6600 hits 3GHz on stock cooling easily.
Once you're there, back down your voltage notch by notch till you find the lowest one it's still stable at. That'll help you keep your temps in check.

As you can see from my sig, the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 can EASILY take it up to 3ghz without a worry in the world, below 30 when idle, and not above 40 when pushed.

And soooo cheap, well worth getting imo, even if you only want to do a little OCing.

running using stock cooler is really not adviced. but for G0 stepping without voltage increase, there shouldn't be any problem.

i've got same case, same CPU, same mobo. but with Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, i can hit 3.8Ghz if i go trigger happy, and increase Vcore beyond 1.6v, the cooler can still remove heat effective enough, keeping it below 75c under 30min load (not done long testing yet). this just shows how much an aftermarket cooler goes.

wow, Arctic Freezer 7 Pro has the last few sticks bent towards PWM, that's really good design! im considering bending my TRUE120
