Ive currently got a 550W PSU (not sure of the brand...i know it was about £45)... I'm planning to go crossfire with a pair of XFX 4830's ive just ordered : ) Do you think the PSU could handle Crossfire or am i gonna brick my entire PC >.< Current Setup: MSI K9A Platinum AM2 Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (90Um Windsor Core) 3Gig 800Mhz RAM 3 Sata Hard drives (varing sizes) Blue Ray R/w Drive Geforce 8800GT AMP (obviously going when the new cards arrive) Hocked up to a 22" running at 1680X1050 Thanks guys n' gals : )
You should be ok - if the PSU supports two PCI-E 6-pin cables then you'll be fine. What size 12V rail(s) does it have?
Sounds like ColorShit to me... I'd rather be on the safe side, better safe than sorry. Buy a new quality PSU IMO.
LOL! yeah buy a new psu i'd say, it'd be a real shame for all your hard earned to go up in smoke because of a badly made (and named) PSU
I had a ColoursIt 520W unti die on me recently, I was not impressed (the thing was a year and a half old and had been sitting in a box for at least a year of that).
You know, typically I'd say that you should up your power to at least a 1000watt psu, but since you're on an amd, they require MUCH less power than intels do. Quick question, are the video cards x2's, or just the plain jane's? Either way, Id say, just to be safe, Id definitely buy either an antec, coolmax, cooler master, or a thermaltake 750 watt psu. You're definitely gonna want to keep your video cards nestled in safety.
Are you joking, he wants to run dual 4830s, they have a combined TDP of 220 watts and you suggest a 750W or even a 1000 W PSU, which PSU company are you a major shareholder in?
Lol, I'm only saying I'd never go with a cheapie psu for any type of situation. I wasn't directly saying to get a 1000watt psu, I was saying the 1000 is a good idea if he was gonna run intel. As far as goes the 750 I suggested, It's always better to have more than enough power than to EVER want to come close to the line. You risk wayyyy too much with that kind of attitude.
No it isn't really better to have more power than needed. If you get the power right with a good quality psu there is no way you are going to put it under much strain. Plus you are looking to get the psu to be in the most efficient range for as much of the time as possible. So ideally if your system is going to draw 400 watts max then you are going to want about a 500/550watt psu so it is sitting about 75-80% full load and about 35-50% most of the time. People ALWAYS over specify the wattage and under estimate the the value of a good quality psu.
Well I can see this is a no win situation for me, so I'm just going to bow out gracefully... Hopefully MrJay can get everything running right. have fun M8
OCZ ModXStream Pro - two PCI-E connectors, two 18Amp rails, very quiet, decent efficiency, £58. Just finished my review yesterday.
i have the gameXstream, never any problems and i bought it second hand from the marketplace. nice quiet psu too
