Hi all, just hopped on the a64 Winchester band-wagon and am wondering if I have actually been sent a Winchester or if the chip I have is a Newcastle instead.

The steppings on my 3500+ read:

    ADA3500DEP4AW
    CBAUC 0431XPDW

I was under the impression that Winnies had stepping codes like this:

    ADA3500DIK4BI

I'm going to be pissed with the place that sent me this if they sent me a Newcastle instead of a Winnie.

    Thanks for any help.

Well the E in DEP4AW means its 1.5v, which means 130nm, whereas Winnies should be I for 1.4v

So I'd say you've been sent the wrong one...

yeah that's kind of what I suspected. If anyone else can confirm this then i'll send it back. I'm not paying Winnie prices for a Newcastle...

    Thanks mate.

    ...made me laugh :D

I'll send it back then. Probably won't be able to get a propper replacement until about mid-January though :(

If anyone's interested I got this chip from the usually excellent Cpu City.

I've had the wrong chip sent to me once by CPUCity, they got the right one sorted for me extremely fast. You probably won't have much luck before Christmas, though ;)

Yeah that's what I suspected. Its just happened at the wrong time of year I guess...

I think I'll just ask for my dosh back and then get one in the new year - I can wait.

    Honest...

I see it hasn't been brung up about winchester being the first point and click user interface. Im vaguely looking at getting a athlon64, what is the benifits of getting a winchester over a new castle.

For the most part its just a dumb shrink of the current manufacturing process. They do overclock much better though thanks to the manufacturing process changes. Next year AMD will be introducing a new version of the K8 using the 90nm SOI process.

I'm not getting a Winchester, it reminds me too much of Winchester, Hampshire, I absolutely loathe that city, and my old school was there, which I also loathe. There's gotta be a Southampton some day, no? :hehe:

    ...for two reasons.

1] I don't want to open the packaging as I'm going to send it back.

    and...

2] The mobo won't get here 'till tomorrow.

    Thanks all for the help.
CpuCity have been really helpfull with organising the return, I guess it's not too much of a problem, just a couple of weeks wait.

Actually, the Winchesters aren't that much better at overclocking than the Newcastles:

    http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?page=2&articleid=613&cid=1

They used stock voltages, but I haven't seen Winchesters get that much higher with more voltage. And they did use the stock cooler, but heat wasn't a problem in this case. Why do you want a Winchester so badly anyway?
