lots of people use solidworks for cnc, well cnc milling at least. check youtube, i think there should be quite a few tutorials on the actual software. but i know a couple people did a autocad series on youtube...

    regards

since this is not a machining forum, you might not get the best answers... if you have more questions you might want to check out this forum:

most CNC cutters use a proprietary system for the actuall CAM and then of course .DWG files are sort of an industry standard for CAD files between systems. Any system that can sketch a 2 dimenionsal file and output it as .DWG can be used for laser cutting. At work I have autocad and solidworks and sketchup, I used to use a waterjet software for 2d pieces because it was soo incredibly nice and fast.

I guess I'm rambling, anyways autocad is sort of a beast, it's not my preferred cad program, solid works or inventor could do this and they are a lil more user friendly. Sketchup is free and code do it albeit it's somewhat limited

try lt instead of full autocad, but autocad should have its own tutorial that walks you through all the basics, which is all you would need for cnc work anyway.

should be easy enough to learn in about an hour or so.
