Hi All Right, i have an optiplex GX620 from work, yes its rubbish, its got a Pentium D 820 (2x 2.8Ghz dual core) loads of ram, decent enough HDD and most importantly, a PCI-e x16 graphics slot. Now i have a spare case, but the motherboard is all back to front, and it comes in quite a nice low profile desk case, and what i need to finishe it off, is a bit of an upgrade to the 7900GS 512MB thats in there now. I have to put in a better PSU to get that 7900GS working, which isn't a huge problem, and leaving the lid off the case means i can fit in the full height dual slot card and the PSU without any problems, but this is by far a final solution. What i need is this: > Low profile card that ideally DOESN'T need additional 6 pin PCI-e power - that will be as good as or better than my 7900GS. A lot to ask, as far as i know, i'm limited to: 9500GT 8400GS 2400Pro Anything newer and better i can put in here? edit: oh and its main use is HTPC, movies, videos, recoding DVB-T and casual 2 player LAN gaming (grid, COD, GTR evo) and its hooked up to a 30" CRT TV (PAL 4:3), so needs TV out
hmm, nice, if it was purely for HTPC, then that would be the winner for sure, but i do intend to play a bit of GRID on this, and so i'm gonna need something with a fair bit of oomph. My 7900GS with the dual core 820 gives me around 40-50 FPS on low settings. Same set up gives me 4,500 3Dmark06. So that's kinda what i'm aiming for ideally, a 4000-5000 3Dmark06 score.
4850? Im not too sure if it needs an external cable for power though but you can get 1 row ones that have one of those 'flat' fans
Firstly, it does need 6 pin PCI-E power and secondly, that's not low profile, that's just single slot cooler; low profile is where the back bracket is half height. (search for it on Google if you are still confused) As for the question in hand, don't have an answer for you, sorry. Out of those three though (if they're the only options) probably the 9500GT.
its such a shame.... two years ago, my 7900GS (which reference wise is a single slot card) was quite a big card, why dont board partners release better smaller versions of older cards, or better still, decent half height cards. I dont mind it being really long but is there any real restriction on why you can't fit a G71 or even a G92 on a half height card??? maybe even the 8800GS, surely that could be slimmed down to fit on a low profile card.
Can you put the case on its side, and mod the cover so that you can put in a full size card and have it look something like this? http://www.texastransams.com/images/articles/p_o_m_/78_blower_car.jpg And have a fan at the front of it sucking air in to cool the card? Do it right and it would be badass! Or even like this one (but with a hood) http://www.flickr.com/photos/aresauburnphotos/2662848267/
haha - i'll post up some pics later, that woudl be a cool idea tho. There are a few mods i need to make to get my dual slot card into the rather tight space, but i'm convinced that this PC will give my 7900GS some life for a while, until i upgrade my 8800GT and pass it on. Would be much nicer if i could fit a low profile card into that space tho.

There are two decent low profile i've seen over here. I know newegg is a US site, but these are examples of what you could get. Sapphire 3650 512mb Gddr2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102754 9600GT 512mb Gddr3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162016
YES!!! that 9600GT with GDDR3 and most importantly the Purevideoo engine of the G9x chips looks exactly what i'm after. Should be a fair bit faster than my 7900GS too!!! amazing stuff, will have to look out for one of those round this way.. Props 500mph
tk421 had a great suggestion, a pci-riser card is always useful, and you can get a fullsize to work with it!
Here ya go http://www.valuemedia.co.uk/popprods.htm?Product=96GFF6VIFCXX I found it on Google Product search UK. It has a 4.5 rating with 42reviews, that site.
