My system (as seen in sig) has a 1600+ running at about 1819MHz and a GF4 4200 running at 325 core, 580 ram. I experience random freezes and slow fps in UT2003 (prolly due to the graphic card OC) when I set the res to 1600 X 1200 with 2x or 4xAA.

I have the opportunity to upgrade the CPU or GPU soon. (prolly Christmas) Which should I upgrade?

in UT, you'll get more benefits from upgrading the Graphics card than you would upgrading the CPU. :)

you dont want much do you?

My VW scirocco wont do 180mph either but i wont complain ;)

If I was you i'd get a new graphics card, something like a 9600XT or a 9700pro (if you can find one). The recent line of ATI cards are much better at handling AA + AF than nvidias current offerings.

when he gets up to 2048x1536, then hes starting to go a little overboard.......

I would upgrade to a 9500 Pro if they were still around, but now I would do a radeon 9800XT

Well I really like having 1600*1200 res, but I need at least 2xAA on any setting, and the low (30ish) fps isn't as annoying as the random lockups.

Now I gotta find a local store that has the 9800 or 9800 Pro.

excellent choice bud. make sure to unistall the nvidia card properly before installing ATI. you shouldnt have any problems - certainly no need for a reinstallation of windows as some might suggest.

Sweet Jees, I only run my 9800pro in 1240x4AA no wonder you have problems.

Go for a 256meg version if i were you - youll probably need the mem speed and capacity for the extra size.

Yeah its a fun car. I'm going to keep it alive cos there arent many about any more. I saw one this year that had a 2.5 litre fuel injected corrado engine in it. that was nice :)

I;m gonna get it nice and tidy, then sell it to someone who will look after it + get myself a porsche 924S.

if you want better FPS in UT2, you need a better CPU, check all the botmatch benchmarks, UT2 is much more CPU dependenant than it is graphics, an upgrade from a ti4600 to a radeon 9800 pro only netted me about 5-10 fps, but when I upgraded from a 2200+ to a barton 3000+ my fps jumped almost three times.

seriously, the flyby is all about graphics card, but botmatch (which is actually playing the game) is all about CPU

SugarBear, did you try the ti4600 with the 3000+?

Incidently, I found a sale for the Athlon XP 2500+ for $56 Cad, and that's a deal I can't refuse, but I also want a new GPU, and that's still likely to be a 9800 Pro.

yep, the 4600 is currently running in the barton system and the 9800 is running in my shiny new athalon 64 system.

but whether you believe me or not, go read pretty much any video card benchmarking site, when they get to the section about UT2003 botmatch, you will notice that every video card is practically identical, because that game is cpu dependent not video, in reality, nearly all the new games are cpu dependent, as long as you have a video card good enough to actually display what's being shown, it comes down to your proc.

I noticed a huge difference when I upgraded from a XP2400+ to a 2.8C when running UT. No lags - just pure unadulterated framerate. It's awesome.

    2.8C, 1Gb PC3200, Radeon 9700 Pro, Intel D865PERL mobo.

I looked at some CPU comparisons (Athlon64, P4EE, AthlonFX, AthlonXP) and I think that a better CPU will give me better UT2K3 FPS. However, if I want high AA and AF, which I do, a better GPU won't hurt.

In addition to reading reviews, I also tested the effect of GPU/Ram speeds on my ingame framerate. 340/600 gives me the same FPS (ingame) as 325/580 with the same Res/AA/AF.

I'll be getting the new CPU tomorrow.
