Well the story goes I once had an old Packard Bell, it had a socket A processor. I now have a Athlon 1800XP which is a socket A processor. The board I have is an Epox 8kha+ and the minimum clock speed is 1100mhz (well the default is). Now I wonder what would happen if I was to put my old Intel i486 SX 25mhz Socket A processor in? I once forced the processor up to 40mhz on the old board, but could I force it up to 1100mhz? Can some one tell me if this is just pure insane to try and If I did what could the possible results be to a) The Board (cost £100) and b) the old processor (not bothered got another 1).
Best Case scenario: Would probably fail to boot Result: Mobo and chip still work, but not together Worst Case Scenario: Different Voltage to core causes Meldown of chip Result:chip and Mobo permanently part of each other... Expensive experiment Alternative use for chip: dremel and drill chip to make smart keyring... Result: Look cool and dumure as the chicks run a mile...and the geeks run from a mile
err... Socket A 'Intel i486 SX 25mhz' Socket A wasnt even invented in those days! I'm sure that'd be Socket 5 or something However If I am wrong then there's no way it'd work as the BIOS wouldn't recognise it or anything like that - you'd probably damage the motherboard
Socket 3 even. 1) This wouldn't work. 2) What makes you think a 486 core is capable of this sort of speed? If it was, why weren't they sold at that speed? Quite simply, it can NOT be done because the transistors are too large in the 486. 3) Voltages are completely different. A 1GHz Socket A CPU typically runs on around 1.75V, and breaks at around 2V. A 486 runs at 5V
I saw a thread once about a guy who got his 486 sx25 up to 250mhz using a freezer. Total bull-droppings but good for a laugh!
i really doubt that it would fit in the first place....reads fly's post...thats what you shuold really do with it...make a keyring and be a g33k
Well first off, the Socket A was invented i've got the proof and if you want any more proof, my uncle worked for them back then. The i486 SX processor does fit in i've tried it. I just don't have the courage to turn it on. I have already screwed up the board once and don't want to do it again. (the first time was not doing this) So you guys reckon it won't work then. Shame really I could of had a few fast Socket A CPU's. Oh well back to speding more money. Cheers for the advice though
sorry icecube you are right, it isn't. I had another look its a socket 2. It's very distorted the board is old and knackered. Sorry again.
I think he meant the 486 board, but the whole thread is complete insanity. If it was possible for a 486 to run at Athlon speeds, what the hell was the point in running it at 25mhz!!! Some people............
It's not pure insanity. But I could dream. Also how about a 386 10mhz chip. Now what will that fit into? I have 2 i486 SX 25mhz chips, 2 386 10mhzz and a 486 DX66mhz. What shall I do with the buggers?
