Seems like Mr. Dell enjoys a bit of Feisty Fawn on his laptop: http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/20/michael-dell-using-ubuntu-on-his-personal-machine/
Yes indeed. Although he is running windoze on his other 3 PCs. It'll be interesting to see if Ubuntu is the chosen distro for Dell's forthcoming pre-installed linux offering. Mark Shuttleworth is tight lipped about any discussions with Dell re: post sales support. My guess (for what it's worth) is that Canonical is in discussions with Dell about providing post-sales support on behalf of Dell with PC buyers being offered this service (for a fee). With XP/Vista refunds running at around GBP30, it will be interesting to see if Ubuntu can offer support for a competitive price.
I certainly hope that this will give way to a new era of home computing, not just for the geeks like us who, by nature, likes to tinker with their machines, but to Joe user also. If he can get his surfing and other stuff done just as good or better than in a windows enviroment, that is a step forward. Now we just need to make gaming better on linux. And easier too.
If a company like dell gets behind linux in the home environment, then gaming improvements shouldn't be that far off. Linux native DirectX API anyone? Probably not, but we can hope.
DirectX is property of MS, so not likely. And if there comes a implementation in Linux, it would be due to the community, not the big companies.
as the second line says, "we can hope" I'm just pointing out that the end possibilities of such a thing increase as the user installed base for Linux goes up.
