I've been looking at those micro atx boards, especially the asus one. However, most atx cases still use the normal, huge power supplies. I was thinking of making a mini pc gaming rig for under the tv, powered by one of those picopsu's.(I think they go up to 200w)
However, the biggest ac to 12vdc converter i've found is 110watt.

I was thinking of something like this:

    5E-VM SE
    core 2 duo E8200
    8800gt
    2/4 gig ram
    320 gb notebook hdd

Does anyone know the power consumption of these components?

    Wrong

    My rig, 450 watt psu

Read this link that cpemma gave me ages ago.

    http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/77909774/m/490004402931

CPU: INTEL Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.00GHz LGA 775 Processor
MOTHERBOARD: BFG Tech nForce 680i SLI Socket 775 Motherboard
    MEMORY: Corsair 4GB (4 x 1GB) DDR2 1066 PC2-8500C5 (CAS-5)
VIDEO: BFG Tech GeForce 9800 GTX (G92) 512MB Video Card
HARD DRIVE: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB SATA Hard Drive
OPTICAL STORAGE: Samsung Black 20x DVD R/W SH-S203B
SOUND CARD: Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 Channels PCI Express Sound Card
CASE: Lian Li PC-A09B ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case
POWER SUPPLY: Seasonic S12II SS-430G 430W Power Supply Unit
O/S: MICROSOFT Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate

    Power (Idle): 133W
    Power (Load): 175W

And that is with the cpu at 3.6ghz and with a 9800GTX plus a dedicated soundcard. Myself and alpha_prime should be pulling atleast 10 watts idle, 20/25 watts load less, as a conservative estimate. As I have learnt, power supplies are the most over specified piece of equipment. Just because they make super power supplies, doesn't mean we need them.

So in theory you could use a very small psu, but it ideally should be 300 watts to give you headroom and to get the most power efficiency.

thanks for all the replies. i think i'll get a shuttle 300w psu, it's even a bit cheaper then a picopsu. I did hear it make a lot of noise, but i'm sure that can be modded?

ok people, i need your help again. My idea is to make a 'console-pc' with a micro-atx board. I think the lian li v350 would be my best bet, however it won't fit into my cabinet and i don't really like the cube shape. My idea was to chop off the top and make it lower, removing about the height of the psu. I was going to use a shuttle psu, but perhaps a normal psu will be better(less noisy) ? This is how i'd want to place the psu:

the fan in front of the psu has it's inner whirling bit removed, it's just a duct for the psu. I'll add a fan grill in front. Would this work?

btw, i'll just cut up the original hdd cage to support just one hdd, just enough space for that.

check the mCubed website. They sell a passively cooled external 280W PSU.
