also don't forget, import tax has to be paid on these consoles, as they aren't made in the uk. this all adds up, i'm not defending the high price, but all these things have to be considered when pricing things up.

biggest crock of **** ever - you try sending a laptop from the USA to the UK and not getting a huge ass customs bill on it.

You'll get tax + the charge for the delivery company paying that tax for you which is the annoying bit, UPS charge about 12 quid for this.

There's been no import duty on laptops since 2005.

20% of £400 is £80. That's what I said. You pay the tax and that's it (apart from the delivery company charging you for paying the tax upfront).

It's not duty, it's simply paying the VAT.

Other products get charged VAT + import duty, that's when the costs really start mounting up.

"Import duty" you pay to customs includes VAT. And guess what is that £80 ? Your 20% VAT :
    £400 * 20% VAT = £80

Why would I call them? I know the charges, you don't.

You pay 20% plus the delivery company charge.

    simples

    Just... stop.

You said the BBC article was wrong, it's not.

Why are you even phoning them? It's all on their website.

HMRC call it Import VAT, guess what the T stands for?

Import duty contains customs duty and import VAT :
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm

100% of import duty in your case is the import VAT (Value added tax).

Not sure the pricing is such a huge issue both consoles xbo at £429 and ps4 at £349 are in the same ball park and roughly what you'd be expecting to pay and not bad considering the long lifecycle.

Unwashed joe public will see the the £80 extra for the xbo as worthwhile for the slick media functionality and of course their whining brat progeny most have whom had an xbox last cycle will be screaming uninformed fanboy support for xbo......so in all there will not be a white wash win for Sony.

Having said that PS4 will be the choice for the discerning purchaser.
