Here goes another 'What Moniter Should I Buy Thread' but bear with me :)

I'm a student and I'm gonna give myself the beefy budget of about £350 to buy a half decent computer monitor.

To give you an idea of my monitor history I had a CRT that came free with a Compaq Deskpro (Pent 2 ), a 17" flat panel that came free with a Compaq Presario and currently a 21.5" flat panel that came free with my Dell XPS. As with all these threads someone will mention IPS in there somewhere, and I'll be honest, I'm not fussed. Having never known better than cheap tat any form of half decent monitor will be good :D

There's 3 angles I could come at this from (no innuendo's please).

    * I could get 2 24" monitors, those BenQ ones that seem to be half decent right now.
    * Buy a beast of a single monitor for £350, and I'm after value for money, I don't wanna sacrifice like 10" just so I don't have a TN
    * Buy a (full)HDTV of some description and use that as a monitor.

How would you guy's do this? And any suggestions too? Having said I want value for money, I don't want more cheap generic crap, I do want a decent brand, but things like the HPLW24... has never really appealed to me. What's and average TN to you guy's is a massive step up in the world for me

    Help :D

This is a perceptive question. Some of us find a TN panel perfectly acceptable, whilst others find that nothing short of an IPS panel will do. It will also depend on what you use your monitor for; gamers tend to avoid VA panels due to their lagginess for example. Unfortunately, you'll have to ultimately decide for yourself.

That being said, I was looking for a monitor with a similar budget less than a month ago. One of my flatmates last year had a NEC 20WGX2, and it was simply incredible (found out later it was an IPS panel); I wanted something similar but at 24". In the end I bought a Dell 2408WFP which is good *VA screen (not quite as good as the NEC). However, beside my Macbook Pro's TN, there is a noticeable improvement in terms of viewing angle, brightness and contrast. And that's not even fully hardware calibrated.

Bear in mind that IPS panels have an insane premium, so if you can afford one, go for it. However, being a student and knowing your pain, unless you plan on heavy photoshoppage, dual 24" for £350 is hard to argue against. I suggest Dell's S2409W, some of the other guys have suggested several BenQ monitors (G2410HD afaik) which also look pretty good. If you go for the MA route, Dell's 2408WFP or 2407WFP is highly recommended. If you decide to go for the best, HP's LP2475W or Dell's U2410 tend to the the models people talk about. Though it's probably wise to wait for Elton on this one, he's the man for IPS panels :thumb:

So you think lean towards two 24" being the way forward, as I'm not into graphic design at all really.

I know all these TN's will be good for me because my flat mate recently bought a 21" Samsung monitor and it looks so bright and crisp compared to mine. Now this is a monitor that has never been reviewed or mentioned on this site, so I assume it's not wonderful, yet to my eyes it was bloody amazing lol.

On the non dual monitor, and just one *nice* monitor, I'm looking at 1920x1200 (not the 1080 ones), and wondered if you could point me in the direction of some good ones.

I mean for £288 I can get a 26" iiyama monitor, which is apparently the flagship of their rang, but why is it so cheap comparatively?

I've just seen that Dell appear to have discontinued the S2409W!! I can't find it for sale on their website and it says that the product is no longer available!

This is bad news as I was going to pick one up soon.

Back on topic, I would say that two 24" screens would be the way to go as well. That would be the best value for money.

With the TV idea, the problem is that you won't easily find a 24" TV with 1900x1080/1200 res. The TVs tend only to be 1080p above 30". Also, TV monitors are not really meant to be used with a computer as they are meant to be viewed from a distance.
