A friend of mine who owns a MacBook managed to catch the newest iteration of the MSN virus that is going around. (The one that sends links with a message to try and get your interest enough to click on them). I know what to do on a Windows computer, but have no experience with Macs. We tried downloading ClamXav... but it found nothing.

What do people recommend to get rid of this thing?

Haha, MAC's maybe harder to catch virus's but when you do, no one knows how to get them off. Ohh how so funny!

    (sorry for the non-helpful reply)

    What virus is it?

As far as I am aware there still are no viruses that can be caught without specifically allowing the download and entering an Administrator password to install it. I may be mistaken.

I didn't think the viruses could effect an osx system.

All the ones I've had sent to me were .exe or a zip file containing an exe file...

Every system can be infected with a virus it needs to someone to write one.Even with linux. But linux and macs architecture is so much more secure that its a hell of lot harder to write one and then to infect said computer(correct me if I'am wrong

I was talking about the msn 'virus', though I'd count it more as a malicious program because it can't infect a system without you running it first.

I highly doubt that it effects OS X. Mind PMing me the link?

Thats why I asked what client was being used, the only way I could think was is the official client was being run on parallels/fusion... Though then it's not technically OSX that was infected.

Well I use adium so its all good :p

It's not a virus that effects any OS, they've stolen their password. Tell them to change their password and to be more careful next time.

I've seen a different one then.

It looked the same as the person, same display picture and name, and tried to send me a zip file with the message somethign like 'check these pics!'

The 'bot' (?) didnt have the extra status line which is why i thought it was odd as this person always has something in their status and didn't reply to messages sent to it.

However, Unix based systems are more secure than Windows based. You have so good control over the whole system. It doesn't however mean they couldn't have viruses.
