I would like to know what the must have tools for modding are. so far i have bought: -assorted wetordry sand paper (600 - 1200) -metal polish -mini screw driver set -wire cutters -electrical tape -masking tape and every day tools (hacksaws, hammers, pliers, screw drivers ect) im picking up a sodering iron and of course a Dremel ( a multipro) on payday what else should every modder have? Im not really willing to buy a 400 drill press or anything yet. Can i use the dremel to drill? the drill i have now is terrible
Get yourself a cordless drill/screwdriver with a large battery pack, at least 12V. You'll wonder what you ever did without one. You can get them really cheap now too And drill bits from 1mm to the largest size your chuck will accept. Also get a good 12" steel rule, flexible.
I'm gonna stick my neck out here, and say don't buy a dremel, get the drill, and a jigsaw instead. */kong is hiding/*
or get a dremel wanta be for $20US at Wal-mart. Black & Decker makes them and warrants them for 2 years.
The dremel is a good tool for intricate cut outs/designs. But I wouldnt reccommend you use it to Cut Large windows. Use a jigsaw for that.
I'd have to fully agree with you, the dremel is nice, but definetly down the list on "must have" tools, you'll get far more miledge ( can't remember how to spell milaledge ) from the jig saw and drill, and buy all means files! Not computer files, but metal working files, and if it's in the budget a small selection of rifler files is nice to. A sanding block to go witht he sand papaer you have on your list is a good idea to, will help to keep your edges nice and square, this can be a no cost item, all you need is a nice flat piece of wood that is well sized to your hand, wrap your paper around it and viola sanding block done! (a scrap of MDF makes a great sanding block)
Cowinacape, it's "mileage". And Hydrogen18, what are you implying? You want one of those? For the tools, I find that I have the most use for jigsaw, cordless drill, dremel (B&D dremel clone), soldering iron and multimeter.
jigsaws are amazing for cutting aluminum, and cordless power drills get the job done nicely (altho a drill press owns), but i must say that the dremel often saves me incredible amounts of time and work by being so versatile and fitting in tight places that a large cordless drill cannot. plus polishing aluminum cutouts and rounding edges is easy and elegant with a dremel... so dremel = god
i know this might seem obvious but dont over look the safety gogles, believe me, its not nice when u get a shard of dremel cutting disk in ur eye
Good one Theo, nothing worse than getting a chunk of flying debris in the eye, had it happen a few times, been lucky so far, but I don't test my luck any more. Excellent recomendation!
No, not at all, I was bonheaded enough to let this happen to myself a few times ("oh this is just a quick little cut.......owwww") Now I use eye proctection when ever using a power tool. Amazingly enough it "only" took a few times for me to clue in
if u can aford it, get a router, specialy if u want to work with plastics etc, nice roundovers etc. just don't leave it on too long or it melts plastic!!!
jelwers files and reg files woudl come in extermley(sp) handy and get a firestorm by black and decker its very good drill for the price
"/me finds kong and pokes with very pointy stick/" drill and jibsaw is all good but when you need to to them fidly things dunno what but hey a dremel is good plus we don't have a drill smilley so dremel it is
