Hi all, It's been some time since my last build and I wanted to canvas the vast Tech community on some of my thoughts. I've grabbed an NZXT S340 Elite case as I know that's what I want to build in, and I know that I want to base it on a Ryzen 2700X as gaming will be more than adequate (despite not the single core throughput of the Blue team) and it will serve me well in productivity tasks such as video editing. What I'm less sure about however is some of the other components. Not sure what mobo is best to keep to a White & Black aesthetic and an x470 board, as well as what GFX. I was thinking of a second hand 1080 now the RTX fanboys are splashing the cash I don't have a budget constraint as such but I also don't have £1000's to deal with this so after any suggestions to save cash in other areas. Thoughts?
The only B&W MoBo that I'm aware of is the Asus prime x470 pro. Personally I'd try stretching to a 1080ti as for the extra £100 odd you get around 20-30% better performance.
Or obviously the x370 pro which supports the 2700X with a BIOS update (that's the exact combination I have )
I’d highly recommend an X470 if buying new. There’s no sense in buying an X370 board to save a few. Black and white is a hard one, but you could take a look at Gigabyte boards as they have a decent black and white scheme going for some of them.
Mostly, yes. They’re also pretty awesome, which I’d actually recommend over the GB option. I totally forgot about that.
The X370 Taichi was black and white (and a bloody brilliant board, unfortunately as with all the old chipset boards it is a complete lottery if you get one with an updated bios to support the newer chips) The X470 instead is black and silver / grey (whatever you want to call it)
Weren't AMD doing a scheme whereby they would give you a chip to update the BIOS of the X370 / B350 etc boards to support the new chips? Only for new boards though I should have thought. Could be totally wrong mind!
I tend to agree here - x470 is the way to go for me. I was looking at the Asus Prime myself, and was aware of the Taichi also, but wondered if anybody had anything else to throw out there. As for the 1080 - my budget isn't going to stretch to 500+ for a new 1080ti. I'd be looking at the 350-400 mark for a used 1080 I think
OCUK have a Ryzen 7 bundle for a around £608: Ryzen 7 2700x Asus X370 Strix 16GB TeamGroup DDR4 2300mhz And a TeamGroup 480GB SSD Sam Ninja Edit: 2700x, Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance is £599.46 on Amazon (Free next day shipping with Prime)
Avoid Gigabyte boards if at all possible irrespective of price - when it comes to overclocking their voltage regulation is a joke (be it a very dangerous one) in comparison to AsRock, Asus or MSI flavour boards.
Is this only with AMD or with Intel as well? I've owned a few Intel Gigabyte boards and never had an issue, but I've also never checked temps.
The current Gen Intel and Ryzen X3/470 boards all suffer with similar issues which Gigabyte refuse to address, as long as they adhere to the most minimum standard then in Gigabyte's eyes that's ok - the brand has really taken a dip in recent years @silk186
Does Asus not have a terrible reputation for customer support? I like Asrock and I've owned a few MSI GPUs that I've been happy with.
I've never had to use Asus or Gigabyte's tech support, but the boards i've had have always been solid, And i've only used ASRock and MSI boards once, that was back in Intel P4 days, so it's just using what i know. Sam
