    Hi,
I can get my friends old pc bundle, it's a i7 4790k, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 motherboard and 16gb of ram. Will this run a 2560x1440 monitor at 144hz with the right graphics card, or should i look for something newer?

    Cheers.

It'll run - I've been running QHD monitors since X58. You'll have to overclock the cpu to mitigate GPU bottlenecking though, assuming you're going to be gaming and going for a fairly meaty card.

I have put a price check up, but the thing thats putting me off is that its nearly 5 years old, The magic smoke could just appear and its £££ down the drain.

Yup there's that too. Finding a decent board would be expensive and you can't carry the RAM forward.

Plus logically speaking it's no better than a 4c 8t Ryzen which are peanuts now (as are the boards).

I'd go for something new. DDR4 is still quite reasonable too.
