Evening guys, a pretty simple one here.

I have/will have thousands of photos which I will be putting online.

Which site offers the most storage for the cheapest price (preferably free)?

    Thanks! :)

How big is your collection of thousands of photos? Is this thousands of low-res JPGs, or do you have a portfolio of large files?

i've been very happy with Flickr, and I eventually upgraded to a pro account. The price is fair, and you get a good service in return.

The other option is to set up your own server, but I'm not sure how much traffic you're expecting, or how you're ISP feels about that.

Could also rent a server, and buy a domain.

So far, it's over 10GB, so not tiny, but that has only been this year.

All being well, I should be getting a DSLR for Christmas, so the amount of storage I may need could increase violently.

Have you had a look at Picassa? The web export feature might be quite useful for dealing with a large number of photos.

Not sure why you would want to host 10GB of data though.

Rather than putting all your photos online, why not use a NAS and then only upload the ones that are really worth showing? It's a far more cost-effective means of back up - I currently run 2 NAS boxes (one backs up the RAID array in my PC and the other backs up the first NAS). I have two portable drives - one that just keeps a portfolio and another that keeps the last year's worth of images - the former is always with me and the latter is taken back to my parents once a month where I back up to another NAS.

It's excessive and I could get rid of one of the local NAS boxes, but I've had disk failure or corruption before and it's easier to spot (and fix) before the files are exposed to potential loss.

In that case, I would agree with Tim that you may not need to put all of the photos online. Why are you thinking about uploading them all, as opposed to using local storage?

If this story is intended to be seen you might want less than 10gb of photos in it...

Jor1995dan, when you say that your collection is over 10 gigs, what file format are the images in?

My advice is Flickr. I'm using premium account, it's not expansive and you can upload photos and videos. Only one issue is that you need to pay for account in time, or your photos will be "blocked", and you will be able to see only 200 last pictures...

My only gripe with Flickr is that you can't really use it as a decent backup service, which kinda defeats the point of the large storage it offers - there's no easy way of downloading all your files again in original quality if you have loads of them.

Flickr is an online photo sharing site. It's *not* an online storage or backup site. Your images are processed by Flickr, and the image you download from them isn't the same as the image you uploaded. It's a small thing, but if you need to back up images and restore from that back up, then Flickr simply isn't the way to go.

Now if you simply want a place to put them so people can see them, then a Pro Flickr account is awesome and well worth the money.
