Here's the proposed build: Core i5-4430 (socket 1150, 3GHz, 6MB cache) Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 (Pretty basic, but does all he needs) Samsung 840 256GB SSD Sapphire HD 7850 2GB He already has 4GB of DDR3 from his old build. It'll go in a little mini case. Total cost is about 500 squids. Am I recommending anything incorrectly here? P
Looks decent enough - what are the main uses going to be? A little bit of gaming I'd guess by the 7850... What PSU have you got?
As long as the psu is about 500w or higher it's probably fine. If it's just for general use and a bit of gaming, 4GB of ram is alright as well. It'll play a lot of games at 1080p no problem. I assume he has stuff like a case, monitor, peripherals etc.
He's got a Corsair 650W PSU which I'm sure will be fine. He uses a Dell 24" 1920x1200 monitor (identical to mine, coincidentally). Other sundries will come from his existing build, along with the RAM. It's a gaming rig. We concluded that a lot of games over the life of the build will probably be XB1/PS4 ports which could tax this configuration quite severely, but it would have cost £750-1k to build something of equivalent capability in a PC so we'll wait 'til next upgrade to try and match the consoles. Sound reasonable? P
Id pick up the 4670 non k, if buying from scan it is about £20 more but has a decent bump in clock speeds and comes with grid 2.
That'll be fine PSU-wise - always pay more for a good brand Good plan batman - worth it as even now some games can be quite CPU intensive (not many mind)
Weirdly enough, the CPU as specified currently comes with Grid 2, from Ebuyer at least. His budget was 400 quid, this is nearer 500, so I don't think we're going to go another 20.
I had an experience with Scan a while ago which made me swear never to buy anything from them, ever again.
