Ok so I've read that I shouldnt be using any other SATA ports than 0 and 1 to avoid damaging components, that being said my new PC will have an SSD, 1 TB Spinpoint and a CD drive. These all use SATA ports right so I would have to not use on of these components until the updated MOBO gets released? Or am I just confusing myself? Thanks.
The issue is that the other sata ports would degrade over time and possibly cause you data loss on hard disks/SSD's. If you intend to get your MB replacement as soon as it comes out I think you'd be safe if you put your HD and SSD on 0 and 1 with your CD drive on any of the others as there shouldn't be any risk of data loss that way.
Replacements are being shipped now, stick your optical drive in one of the degrading ports and you'll be fine 'till you can get a replacement.
Oh, and the issue will definitely not damage your hardware in any way. Besides, the problem isn't likely to crop up for at least a couple of years.
^this^ there is zero risk of data loss. on top of that, theres only something like a 5% chance your motherboard will even develop the problem ever. and even if yours is one of the 5%, it wont happen for over a year. this whole sandy bridge thing is nearly a non-issue.
