Has anybody here been pierced with dermal implants as an alternative to surface piercings?

I'm curious what people's opinions are; I have had a few surface piercings in the past, but they are a pain to heal and the only way to remove them once healed is to cut the bar. I've ordered 4 implants to try them out on my arm.

    Cheers,

I've not had any done, but they're becoming very popular now, i recommend you have a read on on BME and try sifting through modblog and dig up all the info you can on them.

    www.modblog.bmezine.com

you say you previously had surface piercings, did you manage to get one healed, or did they all reject? i'm assuming they weren't done with a straight bar?

microdermals seem to be far easier to heal and way more convenient, but they can just pop out, so be careful!

they can be very effective when done right, but some places are knocking out very cheap low grade implants for the mass market (i hope it's a passing fad, all the horror stories don't do the body mod community much good :( ), so just be safe. and know what you're putting into your body.

So did you want the the Dermal Impact Armour or the Phoenix Implants?
It'll cost a set of Combat Armour, $5000 and the ability to not pick at scabs for 2 weeks.

:worried: Fallout 2 fans will get the reference..

On-topic though, could you describe to someone unfamiliar with the details of body-modification, what these dermal implants are?
I recall seeing alloy spheres placed under the skin before (of the arms particularly, if I'm not mistaken) - Are you referring to something akin to that?

it's basically a transdermal plate that sits under your skin with a small bit sticking out with an internal thread to screw things into. the plate has holes in it so tissue grows through and it becomes affixed.

probably better off looking at the bme wiki page for it http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Microdermal

    Man i thought i was unique :(
I had 2 5cm surface pierces in my forearm. They didn't heal well, so after a while i took them out and replaced them with 4 of the above. Even on the scar tissue from the surface piercings they healed exceptionally well. They are just as much a pain to place as the surface piercings though, because they really need to be JAMMED in place with a lot of force. I fainted :worried:

One of them popped out on day 2, it got tangled up in my girlfriends hair while s..... ummm... scrabble
I was able to force it back in there. It's NOT a pleasant experience though, i fainted again.

AFter day 10 or 15 the little holes in the feet get some tissue in them. That anchors them VERY well. I was able to lift my skin a full 2cm off my arm, relatively painless even.

I loved these babies. I had to take them out for sport (american football) but i still have them and i'll definately have them put back as soon as i can.

    lawl!

the attachment just screws on with a pretty standard thread. You can fit anything you want on there.

I actually had the plan to implant three of these things in my left wrist, and mod the case of my watch in such a way that i could clip it in between those. Watch implant Cheesecake!

Maybe one day i'll do just that :)

Surely, although I can see the benefit of such a thing cheesecake would be difficult to keep in place?

one thing just comes to mind.

I had them placed by a real specialist, dutch guy named Ilja. He's totally kickass :D
He used a dermal punch to make the hole for placing them as opposed to a needle. The result was a perfect round cut, so it didn't rip as easily as a needle-placed transdermal would. Also, the hole was REALLY small. Ofcourse that made the pain a lot worse while he was pushing the thing in, but the endresult was worth it. Have a care, and be sure to post some pictures (if the rules allow the gore) or send them in PM. I'd really like to see this :)

trust me, i'm no expert either. It just happens to be that thiss is the one exact thing that i did do. I have no other piercings, tattoos, scaars, brands, implants, split tongues, etc etc. I just onted one badass thing :)

The most extreme thing i have heard of when talking to my piercer was probably the "deep mouth piercing". This is not, as you might expect, a piercing in the back of your mouth. It's a piercing that actually goes all the way through your lower jaw. It starts under your tongue, comes out under your chin. Apparently, it is watertight, and there is only soft tissue there, so it is actually not that impossible, technically speaking. Totally radical :eeek:

Can you take microdemals out? That looks fairly premanent. Screwing a watch into one sounds like a seriously awesome idea. Maybe you could screw in a Pez dispenser while you're at it.

Xtrafresh that sounded like a.. umm... very romantic situation that you found yourself in O_O hah, any woman I know would have just screamed and made a run for it XD

In fact, i only got this ideaa because of my girlfriend, who has a MUCH stronger stomach for these things then i do. She has a very large scarification, even a little peeling here and there.

    I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Oh, so I actually wasn't all that far off with my Fallout 2 reference.. at least not in my head. I mean, with a more secure anchor (dermal plates riveted/strung to bone) this could be awesome for actual impact armour in combat. :p

Okay, so maybe not realy - but practicalities are no fun and +5% Damage Resistance is not to be sniffed at..
Take it too far and you get -1 to Charisma though. :( (Unless you've got a girlfriend like Xtrafresh's)
Oops, there I go blending reality and gaming again..

Need to get out more? Me? No, no, they keep me in for a reason.

    Wow, quite impressive stuff.

It could look quite good on a person without any peircings/tatoos if placed in a correct position, I still haven't worked out where yet tho. :p
