    I just found an old 8600GT to drop in next to my 8800GTX for a few extra ppd :) I was just wondering after reading around a bit here what a dummy plug is and if I'll need one. Anyone?

    To clarify, it will be running on a Server 2003 based machine.

    It's a DVI to VGa adapter with three 68 Ohm resistors like that:

    It's not exactly true as I found out. both on 2xGTS 250 and now on 9800GX2 + GTS 250 I still need to disable physx and multi-gpu, and on top of that I need the monitor, or the dummy plug as well, otherwise the message comes up that the hardware is not currently supported and that I can either update the drivers (already have the latest ones) or try the systray client. Plug in the dummy plug and voila!

    2003 server is based off XP so does not require active KVM, monitor or dummy's and i am running 2003 x64 server {any} with 6 video cards does not even need an monitor plugged in at all (my file server)

    @coolamasta
    some users in some configurations do not require active outputs (be it dummy plugs or KVM or monitors) every system i have used that vista or higher (apart from pure luck 2 times when messing with SLI) has required an active output, unless the OS is XP/2003 server
