Dont any of you lot flame me as i would never buy another one but a friend wants to buy one. I have offered to build him one for half the price but he wants to build one because of the warrenty. Could anyone recommend a company which i could recommend to him? The budget is ~£600. A nice spanking new tft would be a big plus :thumb:

A TFT and a computer for under 600 bucks. wow so basically itll be a TI83 grade PC... but itll ahve a nice monitor!

did you explaint o him that when you buy individual parts you get manufacturer's warranties which will cover each part. or does he just wanna feel all comfy and warm and fuzzy cuz a big company slapped a warranty on a POS. (god i love Tommy Boy, awesome movie)

No legal version of windows either. Thats the killer when trying to price up a self built PC vs the OEM's - if you are intending to market it legally, that is.

You also realise that if you build his PC then you are obliged to become his free 24/7 tech support line aswell?

I haven't even built my own computer yet but somehow I'm performing that role for 5 different people... who sometimes even call my mobile for tech support!

Dell have the best support...but build it yourself. I find I feel all comfy and warm once that final screw has been tightened on the mobo :D

Just make sure you charge him for all the help that he may need. I have made a real killing from my dad :D .

Trickle: Are you a Wednesday or United man??

I already am a tech support bitch for everyone at school and for the school too. I would make a killer if i decided to charge.

I dont think he would let me mod his case so i decided to buy a premod. Ive already got a version of windows ready to be installed on his system. Hmmm i wonder if i should charge for putting it all together.....

I'd be impressed if anyone could specify a better specification than the £600 rigs on some of those sites. It isn't really till you hit £1500 plus that you can make any savings at all.

I've noticed this a bit lately as friends and family have started asking me about systems. The best thing about a machine that you have built (or had built) rather than the pre-built ones are knowing what you've got. You can get good parts and build a computer that is basically the same as the pre-built box, but you know every little piece going into it, and there's no combination modem/sound card or something (like the old Packard Bells used to have! ). You have to install your own drivers, OS, etc. When you get a pre-built box, you'll get all that extra bundled crap that you have to remove to get down to what you really need. Of course I just enjoy building computers...but I prefer to know the computer inside and out. Makes my life easier in the long run.

Because, let's face it, whether they get the prebuilt or not, they're going to call you at 3:00 in the morning when they have a problem.

Ubermich, it's like you've been listening in on my phone calls.... :worried: But it's the truth. Once people find out you know anything about computers they start with, "let me ask you a question about my computer..." Just walk away. :hehe:

My local PC trader says he cannot build a pc for as cheap as Dell do...this was a few months ago though. But if you buy these systems they don't often specify what RAM or Mobo you have...they can be real cheap!!!

My whole village has caught on to my PC knowledge. Still I make them pay me for when I help them :D

This is also true, pretty much making what I said above redundant :blah:

are u really sirprised at that.. ever heard of economies of scale? ;)

good thing about making ur own pc is that u get to choose quality parts... most of these prebuilt ones only really contain a high clocked processor and use that as their selling point (and i guess it works as most ppl are muppets when it comes to computers!)
