Hi, I'm having a massive problem with my set up as it won't boot unless I clear the cmos each time...
I've tried to find other posts about this online but none of them seem to go anywhere! Once I clear the cmos, It boots fine into windows and there doesn't seem to be a problem. However, if I try to change anything in the BIOS setup when I re-boot to save the changes, guess what happens....
One thing I have noted which came up somewhere online while I was searching is that the date/time get reset to 00:00 1st January 2002. Is this something to do with the CMOS battery being ****? I've only had the mobo 6months (ASUS p5K Premium wifi) so I'd be surprised if it was rubbish but I'm going get a new one tomorrow! Do you think this will be the problem?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

To me it sounds like the battery. Can you try swapping it for a known good one for example from another mobo?

I don't, but I'm going to go and buy a new battery today to see if that is the problem! Can you think of any other ideas?

Well, not much, other than make sure the clr-cmos jumper is off.

Right, well, the new battery is in...
It didn't do much at first, started doing the same as last time and I would have to clear the cmos to get a boot. I then took out everything bar one stick RAM, CPU, Graphics card (just the bare essentials) and went to the boot menu. Changed the date and time to the correct ones and then let it carry on to boot. Last time I got to this stage (with the old battery) after it said add boot device and I rebooted with the HD in, nothing, but now it's booting! Sweet! I'll hopefully get the rest of the computer back together shortly (all my HD's optical drives, RAM etc) and hope it works! I'll let you know, but thanks for your help!

Update: It didn't work with two sticks of RAM (linked or unlinked) at first. Now, if I turn turn off the PSU after shut down, it boots fine every time... Should I have been turning the PSU off every time after use? I've never done that with previous computers but if that's the reason why, I'll gladly do it! I'm gonna try it with the 4 full sticks shortly, to see if that works...

No, you shouldn't be having to turn off the PSU every time.

Sounds to me like a bad mobo/BIOS chip. If you can get it to boot fairly stable with 1 stick now, try reflashing the BIOS to the latest version (or even just reflashing the current one).

I didn't think I'd have to, but you never know!

It seems to be working right now with everything in, so doing this will suffice for now! I'll upgrade it shortly so I'll get it sorted eventually!

The BIOS is the current released one but I'll try reflashing it again and see if that helps!

Well, nothing I've done since my last post has really changed anything. I still have to turn off the PSU every time before I boot and make sure all power has discharged (ie the motherboard L.E.D goes off) before it will boot up again.

Weird problem, but I can live with it!

    Cheers for all your help!

I've heard that the PSU's lifespan decreases heavily if you constantly keep powering it off from the back (like every day for 3 years). I might be wrong, though.

Oh, well, it seems to be the only way I can get my comp to work at the moment so it'll have to do! I should be upgrading fairly soon anyway, and a new PSU is near the top of my list!
