its funny your working on this, as i have been trying to do something simaler. with zaps idea but in reverse like he posted here. hat being having them lit all the time and then fade back on. however i was hoping to use a grid of EL sheets for the keys for more control of the light dispersal. because LEDs light up anything around them and EL lights basicaly only itself.

well i wish you luck on your project. im still designing a control for the EL fading and key interface.

    hmm... I thought PS/2 only supplied 100mA...

I think most keyboards and mice draw 150mA... Maybe someone with non-wireless keyboard/mouse can check? It is usually printed on a sticker under the device.

My point was you would be able to draw > 500ma for a short period of time... maybe it wouldnt work at all..

On the other hand - I was reading dansdata letters today, and a guy wrote in about how to keep the EL strip in his wrist watch (i.e. running off a coin cell) on all the time - maybe this would be a path to persue as they are thin, flat, and low power? (If a watch can do it, malcs can do it too!)

lol yeah wouldn't i need about 52 dual inverters though in order to control each one independantly?

I would imagine that you would need one for each key, but if they fit in a watch, how big could they be?

Or just 1 inverter and a load of transistors or opto-isolators (1 for each key)?

BTW most inverters need a current flow, most get damaged if you the high voltage doesn't have a load on it.
(EL wire, and EL sheets work like a capacitor on a AC load)

You're gonna have to have a seperate supply to the keyboard for all these lights...
Lets say you do only draw 500ma... What if the motherboard don't really wanna do that.. Then you'll damage you're motherboard! Just have a connector on the back of your case for an extra socket with 5v. Very simple to tap into a molex from the PSU.
You could do it neatly by replacing the multicore cable to the keyboard with a piece with maybe 8 conductors... 3 (or is it 4) for the keyboard and double up the others for the LED supply. (You could pull an amp or so then).

Not really, I just want to say that I really look forward to seeing the result. (Hope your camera has a good macro function).
I would recommend making the buttons at least 2mm thicker than the surrounding acrylic, by the way. Maybe even three.

Are you just doing a test tomorrow, or the final thing?

just a test... but if it turns out well then i think that it will be the final thing... i am going to make the buttons higher than the main thing btw :D i am not going to do the back today as i need to work out a way to make it to fix onto the front without crushing the LEDs etc and disallowing proper switching...
