A little background: I have this crappy pre-mod type case, I want to get another one. The ideas for this came from DDKs Bliss Unleashed and Mashies Project 3. This is my 1970s Bradford IC FET. I am going to make a computer case to match it, using the same black plexi, steel accents, and green "lit-through-plexi" lighting. I know it will be 17" wide, right now I am looking at other cube cases for inspiration. I will try to find a removable mobo tray and use that. There will be room for watercooling, although it probably won't be bought (yet) as my P4 is pretty cool. I would just liek to see what you think, as in the title this is still in the very early design stages and i won't be building it right away, first I need to sell a few omputers, isntall some networks, aka get bling-bling. Keepign with the HTPC theme, I want the front to look kind of like this *pic removed to save bandwidth, see pic below for what it looked like* The tape deck will fit a 4*20 LCD, the VU meters will be... well... VU meters.
Since it is a HTPC, size is an issue. It needs to be 17" wide, pretty deep, and as tall as most midtowers. It should end up like this. I am concerned about width, Anytihng more than 13" is too big for a case, yet I need 17" for my stereo. I would mount the VU meter and LCD along the side, but that doesn't go with the theme. I'll amke a 4" box to attach to the side, and it oculd be used for watercooling crap later on. *all non-essential pics removed* Not sure how much longer my server can take this...
dont make it as large as shown on the pic... you could as well lay the motherboard down instead of mounting it vertically, should save you some space in height...
*all non-essential pics removed* I modified it to be wider and shorter, more to a proportional size to the Bradford. Width 17" Height 13" Depth > 17" Using this too - http://www.pcmods.com/details.asp?ProdID=703
After a long fight with logic, I have decided it is best as a Desktop style chassis, for height reasons. The sides will be steel, with tinted black plexi for a bezel and a window. Probably a Vandal Switch too, MUHAHAHA since I am doing green they are like half the price of blue...
What's with the "u" in your part of the world anyway? Just curious... Anyway, an analog style case is a pretty cool concept to me spending the bulk of my early years in the late 70's through the 80's. Kind of retro and all. Maybe add a few analog volt meters to measure psu voltages and hard drive activity, VU needle meters for sound card output, maybe throw in an amp meter for kicks. Use some big brushed aluminum knobs and toggle switches with a black, silver and fake wood case... Oh, and most of all, don't use leds, use 12v indicator lamps for power and such! Groovy...
I will be using LEDs (lost most of my 12v lamps) Brushed aluminum knobs, lit from the rear green lighting (copied from DDKs case) The VU meters will be analouge if I can get them, I have some sound card mods planned. How many 5.25" bays do you think I should get? I am thinking 3 or 4, how about you? EDIT: I want something like this but I can't find them for sale... If I can't find them, I might need to this
Ok, did a little work, and I have views for it. Right now it's seeming like 17" wide and 9" high *bye bye pic*
4 bays is a good standard. That way you don't need to get into a huge case, but have room for stuff. I did a quick search on eBay and found a stereo VU meter for sale. The dude is from Austria, so don't know how much shipping will be though... LINK Maybe you can check out a second-hand store or a Salvation Army type of place. They usually have old stereo equipment with analog VU meters...
I will try to talk my dad into taking me to a used parts store... I settled on 3, as most of the small stuff that goes in those bays regularly will live somewhere else
I'm hoping for an end result like this {BTW the button above the HDD indicator is reset) *bye bye pic*
