    Projekt steinway

Ok this projekt started by a slump, when i decided to start building this comp I had had the dredded modding fever for a while and had planned out many cases but not decided on anything special yet. But what i did not know was that i was not the only one in my family who wanted to do some “modding”. One morning i found out that this hamster had moved in to this speaker and done some serious teth modding on the speaker membrane.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Well needless to say the speaker was totaly ****ed. but then i tought that the speaker has quite a nice format why not repaint it and build a computer from it. I knew i had a small motherboard in my bedroom comp maybe it would fit. I gutted the speker parts and started measuring the inside, it was about 5 mm to small but with some wood carving maybe it would fit.

Well this is the first part of this mod odyseé i have done some carving to the speaker and drilled a hole for the psu fan i will post pictures tomorrow or maybe after the weekend. I plan on replacing the grill with hardened glass or maybe some plexi. The idea is that the mb should sit on top hiding all the other components and wiring beneath. One possible problem is the heatsink and fan i belive it will be to high and protrude above the glass top. Maybe i will fix it anyway it could look kinda cool sort of like the compressor on a dragster sticking up. Since i won the cooler-master heatsink here on bit tech i will probably use it but if it is supposed to be above the glass top i have to fix a better looking fan for it

And a small PS: english is not my main language i will probably have a lot of gramatical errors but i hope u understand what i write anyway.

oki a small update before i go out and start drinking.

well this is the hole for the psu fan, as alway measure twice cut once. i measured 3 times the third time i got it wrong and then cutted it is supposed to be 15 mm more to the right

here is a side view of the box not as much space as it looks

and here is where i had to carve away some wood to fit the motherboard

i have not done so much work on steinway yet the whole weekend i spent drinking so no work done then and yesterday i was out shopping for plexi and hinges both of which i ended up borrowing from my job instead of buying them

here is a shot of where i will place the mobo later (if it fits)

and this is some shots of the hinges i found at work.

    open

    and closed

they also have a quick release so that i can remove the whole lid whitout any tools in a couple of seconds

if i am not to tired i will probably continue working on the fastening of the mobo today

    more pics soon

did a bit of test fitting of the mobo today it did fit but that was with about 0.5 mm to spare so it is a tight fit

on the right of this picture u can also c where i intend to hide the cables and maybe a floppy drive. the cables r supposed to go down that hole to the right and connect to all the "ugly" parts which i will hide under the mobo

got another idea maybe i could fit in a bit of mirror plexiglass (which i have a lot of) and make it like a kind of bezel for the floppy. something like this

made some work on the mobo and hdd mounts

and i also cut some plexi for the lid of the box

    measuring

    and cutting

in the above picture u can also c the velcro which i intend to c if i can use to fasten the cd drive later

and the finnished result. this is a test to c if i should mount the lid inside or on top of the box. (this is on top)

it is a hamster not a mouse unfortunatly it is now dead.

work on steinway is going slowly mostly because all i do is alot of sanding and has nothing realy new to show. when i get some spare time i will try to cut the holes for the mobo io. unfortunatly i dont have much time nowdays, i started a new job so now i have 2 jobs and work 12 hours a day including weekends but as soon as i get some time over i will post some progress pics:yawn:

thats looking well good. it'll be good to see how it works out...

am i understanding right that you want to have the cpu heatsink pertruding out of the glass or something like that? if you are, that'll be super! :D

yes the idea is that the hs should protrude from tha lid. for a while i thought of building some kind of custom fan. the idea was to take a plexi tube of suitable diameter and remove the whole motor/propeller unit from the fan and mout it inside a plexi tube which i then whould glue to the plexi lid. but i will probably just cut a holen the lid for the hs/fan that wil give it a more crude look to.

maybe u r wondering why work is going so slow well one major factor is that the components that i am thinking of using allready is in use by my bedroom comp and that is the one my gf uses. so everytime i want to measure or do a test fit i have to take the stuff out of here comp and then put it back later when she wants to use it again, it is a whole lot of work involved when modding a comp

o btw i have a lcd screen about 230*105 mm big it is an optrex dmf651 anb-fw does anyone know anything more about this one such as what i need to make it work i know i probably need a controller card but not which one or where to get it. well here is a pic of it the snuff box on top of it is 7 cm wide

sorry, i dont know about your monitor. But surely just having it pertrude would mean dust had the chance to get to the system and such. at leat with the tube idea, you could get some aluminium mesh and put it on top...
