    Hi

I'm in the market for a great way to disable my computer from visiting certain sites by URL.
I have heard by a friend over msn that OpenDNS can do that - but he could not show it to me because we live far apart.

Anybody knows if it can do that - block URLs?

Another thing, if it can - what other pros and cons is there about using OpenDNS?
...oh and of cause, how can it be free (or does it cost, can't relaly figure out and don't want to sign up untill I knows)??

    Thanks mates

...by the way, the ones I'm talking about is linked to here: OpenDNS

major con for me was that it hijacks any unresolvable address with their own landing page. so if you type something into the address bar expecting firefox to do it's thing of going to the first google result for that, you'll see the openDNS not found page instead. this was a deal-killer for me, but i guess they've got to make money somehow.

there are simpler ways to block webpages. block the url by firewall, edit the hosts file to point the url away, and some routers can do it including dd-wrt iirc.

Can that be done with more than one URL?
I need about 10 sites to be removed.
Anyway, when I look at OpenDNS it actually looks like they have a spelling service now - or am I wrong?

...oh and by the way, I use a Mac so do we also have a host file?

I changed over to OpenDNS when I was having problems I blamed on my ISP; I've seen above effect but it's rare enough not to be a problem to me.
A Hosts file can block one or a zillion websites, they're available ready-made to block porn, spyware, malware, etc. sites, but they're a text file that can be easily edited in any text editor.
Ah. Hosts file at my link is Win only but see here for Mac.
