I have a PS4 & PS5 & on the PS4 I have a external HDD with PS4 games installed to it how exactly do I get these games to run on PS5 I have tried running them directly from the external HDD when connected to the PS5 & even copying them across from the external to the PS5 & I cant get them to load it just keeps saying cannot load game or app I have read on multiple places it is possible to run PS4 game from a external HDD on the PS5 but I cant work out how can someone explain how to do this please ?
should just be able to plug it in if it is an extended storage drive and the same accounts for the license exists on both machines, I don't have both yet but this is how it works between ps4s in my house and is documented as being the same to Sony site for playing your ps4 games on ps5
Dunno about using USB to transfer enitre game installs (since I haven't been allowed to order a PS5) but according to the Sony website you can transfer save games easily (which is really all you need). On the PS4: On the PS5:
All links suggest the same as I have mentioned, just need to be logged into the same PSN account, no need to redownload stuff. PS4 External Hard Drive PS5 Connectivity is Plug-and-Play (playstationlifestyle.net) How to Use an External Hard Drive on PS5 - Push Square Even says so on Sony site so its not some sort of hack, its a thing which is good as most of mine are on a usb3 ssd, so I should just be able to switch over easy. Extended storage on PlayStation®5 consoles
I have given up trying to work out how I honestly don't believe you can play ps4 games on a ps5 from a external HDD it just says cant play game or app when I try - so I am reinstalling the games from disc & just downloading the saves from the PS+ account I just honestly dont see the point in a external HDD on a PS5 as it does not work the only thing it seems to be good for is save files & media maybe if someone knows of a easy & simple step by step guide on youtube or something that shows exactly how to do it I will glady follow it otherwise I will just stick to reinstalling from disc
Makes sense, after all it has to run through the install process in order to generate the shortcut in the console menu to start the game from.
Not at all, I do this between two PS4s in different rooms, this is why my games are on an external drive, works a treat and was pleased to hear you can just do this on PS5 with your PS4 games as its no change for me, I'll just swap out a PS4 for a PS5 and play as normal, just faster......or not as kuirodragon is discovering. PS5 games can only be played on internal and internal is not very big, so having all your PS4 games on external is handy as it saves internal for PS5 games, my main games I play on PS4 take a few hundred Gb, there'd be nothing left on PS5 for PS5 titles without externals storage, so hopefully your issue is solvable. Have you changed install location for PS4 games to external drive on PS5 in the OS?
ps4 games have to be downloaded on the ps5 its not going to run of the ssd. the small internal ssd is too small and they haven't certified any nvme drives yet. cant be hard allowing use to run ps4 games off a external ssd its pretty much the same os as the ps4. wierd how move ms and sony get things right one generation then balls things up the next
