Ok, a while back I bought a Sparkle Power Company PSU. My other two PSUs blew because of my great mass of hardware, so I finally invested in an expensive one. Well, one day it started making noise (these things are super-silent, built-in noise reduction). A very high-pitched, barely audible whine. So I think nothing of it, and the noise even went away! so the next day, it comes back. and it's PISSED. the noise is louder than ever. so, being that the warranty was up from the store I bought it from, I tore it open and transplanted the fan that was in it. I put in a super-silent fan from Global Win. I flipped the PSU on, and guess what, the noise is back, AGAIN, the new fan didn't help at all. So today I go to the same store, buy ANOTHER one, hook it up, and guess what. The damn noise is back AGAIN. It's so high-pitched, it gives me an ear-ache. I have to take Advil. The real clencher: The more stuff I hook into the PSU, the louder the whine is. In other words, if I only hook in the CD-RW, and one hard drive, it doesn't make the noise. But if I hook in EVERYTHING, then it makes the noise. What's the deal? Is there anything I can do about it?
I think there is something you can do with hot glue,i have used it to stop the wine from an inverter before. The whine gets louder when u attach more stuff because it is drawing more current from the psu. Im sure someone on here will know what part is causing it.
my ears are hurting so bad, I'm ready to hot glue the entire thing into a gigantic glue-block. I guess I could use my brother's computer, but it has a Volcano 7+ - I don't know which is worse
my bro uses a volcano 11+ and he refuses to turn it down at all. grr grr /me begins to think i shoudlnt have installed it for him
*sigh* I wish I had my old CPU fan again. it didn't cool worth ****, but damnit, it was SILENT. My computer was barely audible. ahh the good ole days!
my pc reaches about 50db from where i sit which is about a foot away with the pc at head level. Its strange ive built many pcs and never had a problem with the psu whining...
same here. I've built around 7 from scratch, and none of them have ever have "whiny" PSUs. the thing that doesn't make any sense is the fact that the FIRST Sparkle PSU I got ran for a week without noise, then it started. this new Sparkle PSU I bought today did it the first time I turned it on. maybe it's something with the computer?
how many things are you trying to run off the psu? (btw im going to bed now as it is 3am dont expect another reply off me till this morning )
What watt rating is the PSU? As a last resort, purchase a 600 Watt PSU. Designed for the impossible. Most likely unstressed at 400w.
I had this kinda problem with an epox motherboard once... the psu I had must have surged and damaged some of the capacitors round the atx connectors, because a lot of the fluffy stuff inside had spilled out. The motherboard then made horrible high pitched screams which varied with the load placed on the psu!
it's a 400 watt Sparkle PSU - I'm not even using all of the molex connectors! Nothing is daisy-chained except for the four fans, either
how many molex's has that thing got? youve got one hell of alot of drives. My psu only has 4 molex's and ive got 3 fans and 2 ccfl connected to 1 molex connecter .
the Sparkle had six standard molex connectors (the kind that go on hard drives or cd-rom). I took the hard drive back today, and the guy that sold it to me at the store said it may be something in my system hogging up more power than it's supposed to. he said the Sparkle won't just "blow" or "shut down" when I over-power it like the cheap ones. it just whines So I got an Enermax 430 watt. This thing is SWEET. It has NINE molex connectors for hard drives or cd-roms, etc. It also has two fans, with a fan controller knob to change the speed of the fans. the whine is gone! now to decide whether or not to put my old Global Win Super-Silent CPU heatsink and fan back on instead of this Volcano 9+.......
