I'm doing a major upgrade of my 6+ year old system and am going to replace the PSU.

    I will be getting:
    Core i3 3225, using onboard HD4000 graphics.
    H77 mobo - probably Asus P8H77-M
    8Gb RAM (2x4G Corsair XMS DDR3 1333)
    SSD 256GB Crucial m4
A fanless CPU cooler such as the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme
The existing DVD-RW drive - can't remember exact make.
There are also 2 fans in the case - one intake, 1 exhaust. I may remove/replace one or both depending on noise and temp levels.

There is an existing Samsung Spinpoint HDD ~ 500Gb that I may move to the NAS.

There won't be any overclocking, and only flash games played. Possibly some video editing, but more likely just watching.

I think I only need about 400W, but I want it to be as quiet as possible, without spending more than £50. Would prefer an 80 PLUS certified unit.

    I've been looking at:
    Corsair CX400
    Seasonic S12II-380
    Seasonic G-360
    XFX 450 Pro Core
be quiet! Pure Power L7 430W
    Antec Basiq 450W

    Which is the quietest?

    Many Thanks

Corsair CX400 ? You mean CX430 V2, right ? I will be able to comment about the CX500 V2 (still less than 50 euros in my country) in few hours, as i ordered one as a backup unit and i guess the fan noise will be similar.

Seasonic G-360 - i would suggest you to check out the review at SPCR : http://www.silentpcreview.com/Seasonic_G360

Used two of the 550w Antec basiqs in budget builds recently and just yesterday had one under load for about two hours running the Unigine benchmark to test a graphics card and the fan didn't seem noisy. This was running a gtx 460, G860 pentium, 4gb ram and a 500gb HDD.

Only the main 24 pin cable is sleeved in braiding though so the other wires and kinda ugly.

Well, CX500 V2 didn't seem to be noisy, i would say it had an average quiet fan noise, but i didn't do any load, just booted the system.

If the price difference is similar to ours (CX430V2 for ~45€ vs G360 for ~55€ = 10€ difference), then i would choose G360 if possible due the 80Plus Gold rating (versus plain 80Plus for CX430V2). I would instantly rule out S12II-380, it cannot compete against G360.

And about that 400W statement, i think you overestimate the power consumption, by a lot. My i7-2600K + GTX670 + 16GB RAM + 1 SSD + water cooling system consumes only around 230-240W at Furmark+OCCT load.

Coolermaster silent pro m range are decent. I had a 650w one running and overclocked i5 rig and it was rock solid and very very quiet.

    Price difference is about £12 (CX430V2 for £36, G360 for £48).

It's been quite a while since I last bought a PSU - 400W was considered a low use amount then. I guess it's all more efficient now. How much would you say I actually needed then?

I've seen that term around , but don't really know anything about them. Would one be suitable for my build? Is it quiet?

    Thanks

A Pico PSU would be enough for your build. It is 100% quiet since it has no fan :). You just need a Pico PSU and a laptop power brick.

    That's a power supply?!?

Why are standard PSU's so much bigger??

this is onlt a dc - dc adapter that adapts, lets say, a 19V dc from a laptop brick to an atx standart with usable plugs (24 pin for mobo, 4 pin for cpu, etc).

The ac to dc is externalized to the laptop brick.

Traditional pc psu are ac to dc, id est the laptop brick and the pico inside a single box

Edit : in addition, traditional psu have to follow the atx specification, which is a thickness of 86mm and a width of 150mm. Only the length vary between manufacturers.

I would say at highest load you will be at 120-150W max. Probably even less.

Indeed not even a graphics card in there!

I recommend looking for a fanless one second hand if you can, not sure about prices though

Ah, makes a bit more sense. I will have a look around at home - see what laptop bricks we have.

Wow, much less than I thought!

    Thanks

Note that PicoPSUs end up a bit more expensive than ATX units.

If you are in Europe, you can buy from this shop:
    http://www.minipc.de/catalog/il/575
    http://www.minipc.de/catalog/il/1030

    US people can buy here:
    http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/it.A/id.417/.f
    http://www.mini-box.com/110w-12v-8-5A-AC-DC-Power-Adapter

You might get away with a 80W model which would be considerably cheaper.

Note that you need a "wide input" PicoPSU if you want to use a laptop power adapter. The regular models only accept 12V input while laptop adapters usually produce around 15-20V.

I'm now making final decisions on my upgrade components and have got the PSU down to 2 choices:

be quiet! Pure Power L7 300W
    or
    Seasonic G360

The Seasonic is nearly £20 more expensive - is it worth it?
I'm tempted to go for the much cheaper be quiet! - what do you think?

    Thanks

The Be Quiet! is on preorder anyhow so you're looking at the Seasonic imo.
