Hi all, I've got an IBM deskstar 40GV 40gig ATA100 HD, that does 5400rpm, 9.5ms seek, and 32MB sustained... I'm pretty happy with this drive so far, but fancy kicking the crap out of it by RAIDin it! (just because i could, with my MSI KT266pro-R...) so anyway, i think IBM have stopped making this model, but i saw a couple (18) on an american site going for ~ $154. problem is, the 60GXP 40gig model is also there, going for ~$100... the 60GXP is a 40gig ATA100, doing 7200rpm, 8.5ms seek, and 40MB sustained... so how much of a performance loss will I notice when I raid them, and is it worth it..?? I cant stand wasted performance so would it be worth the extra money getting two 60GXP's raid stripin them..... then using the old 40GV as a raid1 mirror???? ta in advance and happy new year..
Welcome to the boards A RAID will only have the performance of the lowest spec drive so the 60gxp performace would be lost. IMHO RAID is way too over-hyped, I've used it and didnt really see much of a peformance boost except in benchmarking it, I had two 30gig 60gxp's and broke it up because I couldnt afford for one of them to fail ....... Are you sure you really need it ?
