My parents have been pissed off lately. They are in the middle of conversations, when suddenly the sound of a modem dialing up comes over the phone line. My parents constantly blame me, although none of my computers is in the act of dialing up. Does anyone have any idea what's happening? could some program be invisibly dialing up in the background?

it could be a crossover of one of your neighbors. heir could be a fault in your phone line outside of your house. In canada the lines are buried just below the sod, so if the mower nicks it you loose service or can get crossover. I had it fo several months back in 98 but it was interference while on the phone you could hear others ocnversations.

if you have set up your internet connection to dial automatically then a programme could be trying to access the internet. It is then causing the modem to dial up. I solution to this is that in internet properties go to conenctions then choose never dial a connection. Then you put a shortcut from your connection on to the desktop. It will either be in dial up netowrking or network connections depending what version of windows you have.

Also if you have netwroked some pcs you might have shared the connection and a pc on the network could be dialing up as well. Just unshare the connection to stop this.
