apparently the currently placement of my router does not offer good coverage of my flat.
If their software I can use to test signal strength so that I can compare placement of the router.
Intuitively I know where it should be placed but you never know.

This can be for android, windows or mac but would prefer for windows

    thanks mate

Wow, a big improvement by selecting one of the suggested channels and moving it up a few feet.

I've received my ASUS PCE-AC56 wireless card today 802.11ac Dual-band Wireless-AC1300 PCI-E Adapter. For a wireless card it is pretty. I installed and booted up into windows and everything was easy to set up. I think this is one of the better cards I could have gone with and for £30 on Amazon with Prime it was not a bad deal.

    My wired speeds were:

I've moved my router to the top of a bookshelf and have the external antennas on my wireless NIC and I'm getting this:

Is this due to the limitations of my router? I'm especially confused as to why my upload is so much better than my download.

The router has a signal strenth of your computer, and your computer has a signal strength of your router. What router have you got? There may be more settings to tweak.

Your router is 2.4Ghz only, which is busy and tends to be slower than 5ghz, but it does have more range. You might be able to increase the band width from 20Mhz default, but as you've already tried moving it about and changing channel, there's not a lot more you can do with that router.

If you've got a laptop, get Ekahau Heat Mapper for free, and find out how your WiFi signal changes around the house. It could just be down to the relative placement of your PC and router.

As a renter with flatmates I don't have a lot of choice.
I'm thinking to propose that it gets moved back the the living room along with a coffee table and 42" LED to sweeten the deal. Either that or get a TP-LINK TL-WDR6300 or TL-WDR7400 sent over from China ASAP. Would the give me a good chance of reaching wired speeds? Meaning, is this a limitation of wireless or my hub? Is it unrealistic to hope for wired speeds from ac?

You do realise that you have an ac card, and a router that is only up to n speeds.
Update the drivers on the PC, it could be that the wireless is being hammered by other people at the same time hence the slower speeds. Also is the router on the latest firmware too?

I do realise that the router is 300N and the adapter is 1300AC. I'm the only one using the internet during the speed test. The card and drivers are both brand new. The router is 2 days old. It is running

    Hardware Version V1.4
    Software Version V1.1.3_HOP10T1
    Boot Loader Version V1.4.0

I cheacked in the ZTE site and it doesn't have any software updates here.

I'm asking what it would take to reach wired speeds.
