I want to have wireless internet for my laptop in my dorm, without having to buy a router, since I already have a spare USB wireless card lying around that could be put to use.

I managed to get the wireless card to transmit a ad-hoc network and got my laptop to connect. The problem is that I can't get the internet to share through the connection properly. When the laptop connects both PCs register an error stating that there are two PCs with the same IP address on the network. I tried using the ipconfig /renew command in cmd but it didn't fix the problem, and I don't have time right now to tinker more as I continue to pack for tomorrows big move. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can set this up tomorrow at school. I promise cookies, if it makes a difference.

    Thanks a bundle.

you need to give both adapters different IP addresses, not let them assign dynamically.

You can use ICS (which is naf) or set up a proxy server (eg analogue X's free proxy) or set up an AP on you main computer instead of using an ad-hoc network. The latter being my preferred solution. If you have a ra-link based card, it has an AP-mode in the ra-link drivers. Other manuf. I'm nto sure about off hand.

Internet connection sharing is quite good, basically right click on the internet connection, the click share connection, and windows does the hard work for you, quick and easy.
