Ok, so after watching the series over the course of a few weeks, I've just been to see the film...and I'm impressed. Picks up nicely where the series ended, but has a lot of new flashbacks which basically tell the story of the series (for those that never saw it). Special FX were nice (the kept the whole 'real-life' camera movement idea that was used in the series). Makes a nice change to see a Sci-Fi space film with FX you can actually 'see' (not like the fit-inducing FX of the last three Star Wars films - I swear you gotta watch those scenes in slow-mo to work out what the hell is going on). Spoiler Was a bit disappointed that Wash died. And I think killing of the Shepard was probably just done to reduce the amount of info given to the viewer (going on the assumption that they'll not be making a 2nd series). Spoiler + I liked the idea that River had been turned into a weapon - she totally kicked butt! So, anyone else seen it yet? What do you think? (and please Bindi, leave this thread alone unless you've actually seen the film - I know you don't like Firefly, and I'm sure everyone else does too ;-)...
I saw it twice actually. On opening day and again yesterday. Really good movie, is a good movie for Firefly fans, not disappointing at all. Spoiler I still wish they revealed Shepard Book's past. In one of the Firefly eps, he got immediate medical treatment after showing the Alliance some type of ID. I want to know why!!
Just saw this last night... It's really incredible, a more than worthy successor to the TV show. It does a good job of being a standalone movie, although it's easier to understand if you've seen the show before. I also agree with the above posters' spoiler comments.
Loved it to bits. I had heard that we where going to loose someone, and once Book bought it, I thought that was it - so it was an extreme shock that Wash died as well. The collective intake of breath from the whole theatre told me that everyone else was a shocked as I was... In fact, at one point I thought everyone was going to shuffle of the mortal coil - after Zoe got sliced up the spine, and Kaylee got spiked - well, it looked kind of bleak, eh. Thank goodness for River the Reaver Slayer. Spoiler I think it's fair to say that Book wasn't always a shepard - I have a funny fealing he used to be a Parlimentary Operative as well... All in All - SHINEY!! Kaylee: "Been more'n a year since I had anything twixt my nethers didn't run on batteries!" Mal: "I don't want to hear that!" Jayne: "I could stand to hear a little more..."
Spoiler I do think that Wash’s death scene was done quite well in the way it forced the viewer to feel about 4 different emotions in the space of 10 seconds (<funny> (after crash-landing) “I am a leaf in the wind, watch me…” , <scared> BANG – spike through the chest, <shock> when you realise what’s happened, <sadness> Zoe’s reaction, and realising she’s just lost her husband)… Did anyone else notice how Kaylee & Simon’s accents seemed slightly different compared to the series? Kinda bugged me at first, but stopped noticing it after about 30 minutes.
Never having seen the series, I enjoyed it thoroughly as a stand-alone film. The characters were well-drawn (particularly the baddy was --at last!-- somewhat more complex than the standard caricature and psychologically credible), the film was well-paced with good humourous one-liners but not overplayed. The whole thing was balanced. You don't see that often. It was everything that the whole Star Wars saga (or is that debacle) should have been. Learn, George... Learn big time. Joss Whedon does seem to have a prediliction for 17-year old girls who kick ass... I like to think he's just aiming for the teenage male geek audience, but you have to wonder. Still at least he portrays strong female characters (even the companion kicks butt) rather than dumb girls who just stand in a corner shrieking hysterically every time the chips are down. Spoiler Was gutted when Wash died. Not having seen the series I hardly knew the character, so it gives you an idea how well written they were and how easily you ended up relating to them. I particularly liked that this somewhat pasty looking, not at all athletic geek would be happily married to this dark amazone warrior. All in all it has made me want to watch the series, and root for a sequel. Not many films do that. Well done, Joss.
http://centripetalnotion.com/2005/10/10/07:37:41/ There's a nice video you can download here that shows clips from Firefly to basically overview the entire series. It introduces the characters, shows some background info for each of them and fills in anything you might not understand.
I got to see the film on its release, promptly got hold of the firefly DVD and watched that too. Its a really rich series, why was it canned? Are further Firefly films/series confirmed?
Er. Because it was a really rich series? Too intelligent for the average couch-potato audience, I suspect.
Fox weren't too keen on the idea in the first place - Whedon had a hard time convincing them to back the series (financially). They messed it up in the end anyway; episodes shown in the wrong order, airing the pilot about halfway through etc... Probably not. I'd imagine the reason they killed off Shepard Book was probably because they were going on the assumption that there wouldn't be a 2nd series/film, and didn't have enough time to explain his background...
I thought the film was really good in so many ways. Instead of a $150 million FX-gasm, firefly revolves around good writing and characters. So good you can forgive any moments of the special effects not being on par with the likes of the Star Wars prequels and the like. I was a fan on the series before the movie as well. Terrible shame that Fox canned it to make more room for thier campy "look at me we do Reality TV too" shows. I really do think this is the new Star Trek. Think about it- another show that had a short run, developed a very loyal fanbase who bought enough DVDs to spawn a very good and unlikley hit movie. I would be suprised if Serenity is the last thing we see from the Firefly universe. I mean really, what good Sci-fi has anyone really seen latley. The latest offerings from Lucas and that tradgedy Enterprise didnt really light my hair on fire, those franchises are done.
I seen this movie as well, and loved it. It's inspired me to pick up FireFly. If the series is as good as the movie, I'm in for a treat!
i didnt hear good things about the series but was plesently suprised by the film was good and i enjoyed it. might go get the series
Not a bad film, acting was a bit ropey in parts, but all in all I enjoyed it. Made me want to get hold of the series , which being a sci-fi fan I don't know why I've never seen it.
I'm with yoda. Unfortunately nowhere around here carries a rental version and I don't really want to spend $40 or whatever to buy it. And other methods I could employ are questionably-legal at best (considering the fact I do have legal access to channels it would air on), but I've been a bit lazy on the .torrent front recently. Oops... I didn't say that, did I? I mean... oh... nevermind. Don't [hate/sue/kill] me MPAA.
if anyone is looking to rent the series, holleywood video usually carries it. thats where i got it a few months back. blockbuster didn't have it = evil. great series though. im hoping either more movies or another season that they dont cancel for some shi*y show.
