evercool fans are quiet and cheap, but if you want very good near silent fans, then PAPST are the way to go...

I just ordered up 4 evercools and 1 sunon 80mm to go into a blue dragon for my dad. I'll let you know what I think of them when I build the machine (probably about 2 weeks time).

Get one thing very clear, low noise does not go with high flow rates - Papst make some very quiet fans, but only at very low flows. Their high-flow fans are high-noise. Marginally better than their competitors, but still noisy.

My Papst Variofan is completely silent at low temperatures, but I can hear it across the room when it gets really hot.

Golden rules for low noise are minimum flow to give adequate cooling, quality fans well-placed to suit the case & contents.

Any fan can be made virtually silent with the 7-volt trick - free & easy - but flow drops to around half the 12v level. So 7-volt 2 fans.

Also the usual punched grille is a major noise-maker - cut it out & fit wire grilles, or no grille behind the bezel.

http://rswww.com/ sell a good range of Papst fans, but I'm struggling for a source of the Variofans (these have a thermistor so speed up as things get warmer)

You need to register to view the datasheets, but it's no hassle.

They do supply Joe Public, but charge delivery.

For quiet, you want the NGML (medium/low) or NGL (low) models.

Check out http://www.papstplc.com/ for full specs.

You can't really have a quite fan that shifts a lot of air volume the amount of air flow is proportion to the volume of the noise created, even if the fan is quite the movment of the air is going to cause noise because of the turbulence created as the air moves through the fan grill and case etc.

The only way you could have effctive cooling quitely is to water cool your system. myself i just live with the noise, as i have 4 80 mm case fans, 2 being delta 69 CFM, and 2 slot blowers and the noise caused by the delta's is comparable to a small hover but they shift the air, one orking on its own can cause a 10(o)C drop in temp to about 20(o)C system temp and 35(o)C for my athlon.

So basicaly i'm saying either go for water cooling or put high power/high noise fans but hav them switchable so you can have it quite when you're not doing prossesor inersive work (or at night when you playing some game at 2 in the moning and don't want to wake anyone up).
