Last Saturday I was playing SimCity 4, I had built quite a large city almost filling the entire area and as such it was slow as hell and it was really beating the crap out of my hardware then all of a sudden it soft rebooted my computer.

Ever sine that point my computer kept on rebooting randomly in windows, I thought it was a virus at first but my virus scanner could never get to finish its scan run before my computer rebooted itself. I tried to reinstall windows XP but it either didn’t copy/ or couldn’t find files properly or just crashed.

Cutting a long and painful story short I have found out that SimCity 4 has killed my motherboard! This seems very odd to me but I’ve eliminated everything but my motherboard this gave me a nice excuse the buy my self a nice new Asus A7N8X Deluxe with some Corsair Platinum TwinX XMS 3200LL ram :D

And the moral of the story? Don’t get to good at SimCity 4 or you might just pay a high price ;)

It hasn't given my vapo anything to worry about yet :)

Actually after a bad start I'm beginning to like the game too...

It's a bit off that a game could hurt your PC, though it was most likely temperature related and waiting to happen (any sustained load would probably have triggered it). You've done things like reseated your northbridge heatsink I take it? I guess it could also be a dry joint somewhere which eventually pulled off on heating..

westeee: I cleared my bios twice but didnt fix it :sigh: I even tried different ram but still no luck.

cheese: It probebly was heat related as Sim City 4 was thrasing my computer unlike any game before it and im talking about 40 second between screen updates ;)

I hadent messed with any cooling tho it was all stock and cooling quite well.

Meh should get my new mobo today and ill tell you if it works (or not ;))

You're lucky you figured it was the mobo, :) I spent £300 odd replacing other bits when i had a similar problem without success until I replace the mobo... Don't want to replace it again, ;)!

    Indeed :naughty:

But im so lazy ;) I got one of the office girls to bing it to me :D

    Well you never guess what....

    IT STILL DOESNT WORK!!

My memory doesn’t work now well kind of, my error is the same ALL of the time now and that’s during winXP’s memory check during the install. The odd thing is tho I ran a dos memory checker and it reported that everything above 256meg is fubard so basically one of my dimms is dead, I removed the broke one and tried to install winXP again but it still crashes in the same place. :sigh:

Heh I should get my new ram tomorrow ;)

Kevo, what cooler do you have? If it's an alpha you may want to try tightning it a bit. A re-application of thermal paste might be in order (unless you already did that).

The only other thing it really could be is your video card. Tried reseating the heatsink on your gpu?

edit: It could also be a bad power supply...
