I'm building a plexi case that I want to paint a nice black. I want to make it so that, when the character LCD is off, it looks like nothing is there, and when it's on, it looks like the text matches the case. I haven't started yet, so all ideas are appreciated.
Combination of window tinting and ensuring that the background around the character LCD display is completely blocked off from light.
That's gonna be a hard one with a LCD; you'll lose a lot of contrast if you're behind tinted foil. A white on black would do but it'll never be stealthed properly. A VFD would yield better results; http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=70168&highlight=vfd+stand http://forum.lcdinfo.com/viewtopic.php?t=706
Well it depends on your design, I've never done it myself but this is the way I would do it. Create a box around the LCD device with the purpose of blocking all light around the circuitry of the unit. A good design would be a project box with a black foam or rubber gasket pressed up against the acrylic. The next step is to use a light but black limo tint (no the cheap purple stuff). Something like a 35% tint maybe even darker (I would experiment). This will stop the light coming in from the exposed area of the display. And that's it.
This looks more like a Instant message convo than a thread but with that said Yeah just use some tint. Or you can try and find the stuff that defyant used in Master Blaster. Its in the project logs
I did it in Divergence, G-gnome did it in Orac 3, has been done a few other times around here... Bascially put it behind dark tinted plexi and turn on.
Thats what I'm doing,... check it out. My side windows are tinted and the VFD is being installed inside the case so that when off you cant see it at all. Heres the link: http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11505&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=660
