I think you mean 4, but Superman IV was a real turkey. 1: Superman - origin story 2: Superman II - Supes vs other Kryptonians (General Zod) 3: Superman III - Supes vs Richard Pryor 4: Superman IV - Supes vs "Nuclear Man" (A clone of Supes made by Luthor)
New trailer today. http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/supermanreturns/trailer2/medium.html Looks great in every respect except for Kevin Spacey. Totally miscast imho. I realise the original films were as camp as a row of pink tents, but Mr. Spacey just takes it to a whole new level.
Bloody hell, how much does he look like Reeve as Clark Kent? Spooky. Looks good fun though. I'm looking forward to it! Kinda agree about Spacey though.
Yeah they did a good job of recreating the feel of the original films. But that dude has one hell of a funny looking nose.
Firstly, thanks mook for the trailer, very greatful Secondly.. .. im a little worried after seeing that trailer. I hope they actually concentrate on the story instead of trying to make it some funny cliche'd skit of some sort.
How did I not see that this thread was updated a week ago!! Anyways, I randomly happened across the 2nd trailer, and imho, it looks GREAT!! Btw, the guy that plays Perry White is the guy that played Skeletor!
Ok. Here goes: 1. Superman Returns has opened in the U.S. 2. I'm not sure if has yet opened for you guys in the U.K. 3. I saw Superman Returns today. 4. Spoiler Oh my FREAKIN , it was pretty good. I REALLY liked it, and OMG there was the part that stuff happened and it was like so cool. And I MUST mention the part where I was like SOOO surprised and never thought they'd include that in the plot. Then there was the time that you saw this huge paragraph covered by the black spoiler bar thinking I was actually going to ruin the movie for you (you would be + ) because human nature forced you to hover over the spoiler-tagged part even though you knew it could possibly ruin the movie for you. Man, that was something!! But seriously, I REALLY want to talk about the movie, but I don't want to ruin it for the rest of you. Aren't I a nice guy teasing you all like this! 5. In other words, go see it for yourself - it rocked!
OMG, I just watched that latest trailer and have the biggest grin on my face. Can't wait to go see that!
The latest and the seond trailer, trialer 3a, is much better than the other, and gives a greater insight into the storyline and the characters. It reveals what Lex is doing and how as well as the baxk story for the movie. The movie has a prologue which desribes what happens to Krypton and after Superman 2, Superman leaves to discover his planet (or whats left of it) and after watching it I am more impressed then I was before. When I saw the original trailer I thought that it was a waist of time for me to see it and that it was nothing special, but I'll definatly go see it now...
ahem! noones mentioned this movie yet that much yet :S What did you guys think? I thought it was enjoyable and a definate 7.7/10
As I've already mentioned, it's an overall superbly done movie. Women and men seem to like it. But Pirates2 saw a lot more anticipation and is kind of dominating the theaters these days. Released a week apart, more people would be inclined to go see Pirates2 than take a risk with superman, ESPECIALLY when women are involved. Many women seem to be biased against comic book movies, although with the success of spiderman xmen, and batman begins, they're starting to come aroung.
Awesome movie... it actually brought a slight tear to my eye. Yes I know, i'm a big sentimental wuss, but I think that this new guys looks a lot like Reeves (and he's been through a lot) and to see Reeves born again (meaning they decided to keep Reeves features as a the 'face' of Superman) really did do it for me. Awesome movie, if you were a child of the 80's then this is a must see movie. 's up all 'round.
Agree whole heartedly with J-Pepper, tear inducing. Story was perhaps a little strange, but was brilliantly executed and worked well. Routh had very little dialogue in the film, perhaps not suprising, but I thought he pulled of fthe part with aplomb. And it is quite scary how much he looks like Reeves in certain scenes. For those that want some discussion: Spoiler Love the way they've made Superman Returns a double-entendre. Did y'all guess that was Kent's kiddy then? Even though I had my suspicions, it was still brilliant when the moment came and he threw the piano across the room to save Lois. Was pretty amusing when they tried to revive him with the electric shocks when he flatlined. Nearly wiped out the entire grid. Nice inclusion when they tried to jab him, too. Did anyone have a sharp eye to notice any interesting words on the scrabble board at the beginning? The only one I picked out was 'alienation'. Dunno if there could be more in there with subtle references. Might have to wait for the DVD.
This is pretty much going to be all spoilers so i'll just give a quick outa ten for everyone to see: 5.5/10: Slow, pointless and cheesy but when superman was being superman, it was cool. and now the bits that you definately don't want to read if you havn't seen the film: Spoiler I went into the cinema thinking, I really hope that this is a good film. I really really did. I had seen the trailers, I had read the press and I had made up some of my own conclusions that it had to live up to. To my great relief it did! Excelent! I sat down, watched a nice intro and some retro text and a brilliant first 20 mins where superman "returned" with a bit of vague explanation (which i looked forward to being explained) and a supurb bit of action with a plane and fire and last minute rescue which ended in a football stadium! Frickin brilliant! They have saved superman from a horible flop. They had even given him a nice new rubbery cape with a beveled (and embossed!) logo! But then...... It went crap, and i mean, really, it went crap. Brandon routh did a great job, but louis lane just didn't feel sassy and strong how she is meant to be, she just felt like she was pretending to be. The kid.. well, they nearly always anoy me in films, and this was no exception. I also guessed instantly that it was going to be supermans kid, but i was hoping the whole time that it wouldn't be... Its so obiously a desperate cling by the writers to make sure that the "new" superman films had an easy way to sequel it. Kevin spacey was great, absolutely brilliant, but he was hindered by crappy writing and only 1 scene with superman.... Parker Posey was good at being the heartless evil mans sidekick, but to me lacked any real nasty streak that she should have had.. at least untill her inevitable change of heart. a few bits that annoyed the hell outa me: The minigun incident.. What the hell? Were they just trying to proove how hard superman is? "i know, lets fire a minigun at him" Was that all they were thinking? Firstly! Why the hell was there a minigun on top of a bank? Secondly... what did that scene have to do with any of the rest of the film? Thirdly, how crap do the badguys have to be... I mean, he's withstood a minigun, what is a peashooter of a gun going to do? I wouldn't have minded this scene if it was lex luthors henchmen stealing something worthwhile, but it was just a stupid adition that made no sence... The next set of scenes that annoyed me was lois' accidents. On the plane, she was being flung arround like a little doll, she gets up and carry's on. Then she gets battered round the head by some massive bloke with a clown on his skull. Then finally, she gets clouted on the head by a massive door, but still, she keeps on going! Just stupid! And the final annoying scene... Superman, lifting, a, whole, island.... Which is not only an island made of very heavy crystal, but also cryptonite... Something that earlier almost killed him. Why the hell did he only just manage to stop a plane from hitting the ground, and now he can only just lift a continent... FFS make up ure mind superman... The whole film (after the first 20 mins) just felt too holywoodized. They should have taken some lessons from batman begins. and, not only does brandon routh look like reves, but holy poop he sounds just like tom cruise!
Well, I really liked the film - It had a nice pace all the way through imo... a few things Spoiler In responce to will - I totally agree that lois wasnt strong and dominant enough, and about the bit where she was being flung about the plane - but some of the other stuff is ok... The minigun scene was part of a sequence of scenes where he was just saving stuff - it was basically "superman is back" after the plane save. The plane save he could have done quicker but didnt want to rip everybody in the plane through their seatbelts at ~400mph The island I was dubious about, but it appears it was laced with kryptonite - not fully part kryptonite part meteor crystal. He was having trouble at the end and did eventually collapse. However I have no whim with the idea that superman can lift an island by himself - but I see your point My favorite scene was when the island was being created and he was just whizzing around saving everybody What a guy! My thoughs - go see this film now! 8.0/10 - Brandon Reeves fan-TASTIC as superman and generally casting was good (yaykevin spacey!).
I agree with some of what Will's said, but I thought it was freakin' cool all the same. Spoiler I have to admit I did think exactly the same thing about Lois getting the crap beaten out of her. Flung around the plane like a rag-doll - survival not. Then she got proper monstered on the head by the heavy. And if that wasn't all enough, that door on the boat looked like it was slammed so hard, it coulda been by Superman himself! Yet she wakes up moments later. And there was much rejoicing. In spite of all of this, i thought she was hot, so that makes up for it. I can also see where you're coming from with the robbery, but I think it was, as Bogo said, just introducing you back in to the world of Superman fighting crime for the good of the city. As for the mini-gun => handgun moment, yeah, that was just for effect, but it was frikkin' cool - even if I had already seen it in the trailer. Kevin Spacey I thought rocked the big one. I know some people were bitching about his casting and thought he was totally inappropriate but I thought he was top-notch. As for your beef with the plane incident. Two things: 1) Bogo pointed out. Stop it too soon and they'll all be dead from massive internal haemorrhaging. 2) It had probably reached terminal velocity. I've had a Google and can neither (a) find out what that would be or (b) be bothered to work it out from the forumlae I found. Anyway, that's a hell of a lot of force. If he did just think hey wtf I'll stop it dead, he'd have stayed dead still in mid air and have ripped through the middle of the fuselage as it continued over him. And, seeing as he couldn't for fear of killing all passengers, it probably required a massive amount of effort just to get that massively heavy object travelling a gazillion miles an hour to actually stop anyway. Oh, and for the record, I believe it was baseball. Continuing to the island, I did think it quite outrageous but I don't think it's past him to manage to lift it. Come onman, he's Superman. As for the presence of Kryptonite; if you notice he actually went down to beneath the island, sous-terre. He lasered his way under the sea bed and, I believe, lifted from some way further down. However, as he was lifting the island, it was continuing to grow (as we saw it would from Luther's projected maps). He started off being able to lift it fine because there was a big-ass layer of normal rock between him and the gruesome-greenie, but as time passed it continued to 'grow' through the rock down towards him which is why he started to struggle more and more, eventually becoming too much for him and plummeting back to earth. I'm totally going to watch it again this week.
Was OK, not fantastic tho imho. I think they tried to cram too much into it, skipping over some parts too quickly yet drawing out others. Hwulex: Spoiler I noticed alienation too, and 'Germs' too iirc. Spoiler There were some pretty cheese moments/lines in it too. To think that *spit* Paul Walker was originally considered for the part of Superman...ugh As much as I like the Spacey, I'm not sure he entirely fits my perceptions of Lex. Don't get me wrong, he can pull off hardcore-mean but he's a bit too jovial about it in some places. Spoiler Another thing which got me was the age-old gripe of how kryptonite affects him differently depending on the situation. Like he can sometimes get really close and it won't do anything (when he was lifting the island) but then other times it'll completely knock him out. I'd have thought they'd have sorted that by now!
