While I agree the Nexus 7 is a great tablet I have one myself the OP has already said he needs a 10" because of his poor eyesight. @ Big Elf I still think you should look at the RT windows tablet, Android has always been my first choice but tbh I was really impressed with the RT, the apps for it are growing all the time
If screen size is what he is after The 12.2 inch Samsung review down to £400 at PC world. Should be good for multi window.
I can't believe that people still speak like this. Comparing the two don't work because they're such different OSes. The Ipad has a good specs, but it's very specialised for the IOS. Android is very flexible, modifiable and customisable. Even with jailbreaking, the Ipad/Iphone is still very fixed in its ways, and that's fine for people that want a simple but fast machine that is quite easy to use. Android is for those of us that want and need that flexibility, the obsessive and control freaks that want everything their way, and that's why I prefer android. I'm not saying one is better than the other, they're both designed for different kinds of people and for different uses. They both have their own merits.
There's plenty of tablets but a lot of it comes down to user choice and if you really need a tablet. iPad Air Chromebook Surface pro Samsungs 12.2 tablet All fill different user needs. There is no right or wrong choice just what fits your budget. Only thing I'd avoid is the bigger nexus as it's just a blown up nexus 7. I brought a surface pro 2 as it fits my needs better than the other options.
Don't bother with the Transformer series. I was an early adopter of the TF101. After 30 months of constant, inexplicable crashes and reboots last December it decided to stop working, again for no apparent reason.
+1 I bought the TF201, and though still kicking along (just about) I'd stay well clear. Terrible experience.
i don't believe that having full control over every aspect of your tablet/phone improves the experience like it does with say, a PC if you enjoy tweaking for the sake of tweaking, that's fine. i would just rather have a device that works 100% of the time
Whilst I understand the point you're trying to make, that argument doesn't hold much water in 2014. Apple might have the most mature mobile OS, but it's also one of the most under-featured, and stability of Android and Windows is right up there with Apple now. Ultimately your choice of OS nowadays should be driven by inter-compatibility with existing laptops, PCS, smartphones, media boxes etc. rather than arguments from 2010 about iOS being more reliable than the competition. I think Apple products are beautifully polished, and very pleasant to use, but I also feel like I can do better.
I'm sorry but this really irks me when people say this about Apple hardware. I have an Ipad Retina and that ended up dying a month after me having it from logic board problems, plus I've had to fix a fair few Apple products where parts have just inexplicably died. Now I am not saying I do not like Apple, I do, that is why I have an Ipad and will be getting a new Iphone in September but you cannot say they work 100% it is impossible (rant over)
I've owned all 3 tablet platforms still own 2 of them. Andriod was the one I got rid of its lack of compatability with the docs and stuff I was using made it pretty much a waste of space as the iPad is better for media stuff. It also has the better inbuilt web browser. ( well aware you can install one but that's beyond what my mam could work out and she was the one using it.) iPad Air gets used by family more than me for web browsing and media consumption. Surface pro use on a daily basis mostly due to Microsoft Office been required for my work, that and I can install a real version of football manager and a few other games that work on it make it a useful device to have. What your gonna use it for will have more impact than any review will tell you. If its for media and games use then buy the IPad if its for work usage buy a surface pro. That's how I see the market at the present time. The arguments over what is best is mute point as all have there strengths. Andriod biggest is the ability to tinker and some people love this I did myself but eventually you stop routing and cracking stuff open just to get a stable device. Anyone who has routed before or jailbroken on IOS can tell you its not without its issues, if they say they have had none they are not telling you the true facts.
Just been to the Southend PC World store only to find it permanently closed. The PC World website still links to it and doesn't give a clue that's it's shut, not happy. Could someone please tell me a specific Surface Pro model to look at. I wasn't impressed with the Surface 2 10.6" tablet I tried out the other day but if there's one that's a decent bit of kit I'll consider it. I do like the idea of a full Windows OS on a tablet but don't want something sluggish just to get it. Just to re-iterate, the primary use will be for reading digital Newspapers and Magazines (it turns out I'm also allergic to my favourite US Motorcycle Classic magazine). It will probably be used a lot for browsing and possibly watching movies but not for work type stuff. While I do like tinkering the only app I have on my iPod is HanDBase which I'm also likely to get for whatever tablet I end up with. It's very unlikely I'll root it.
i'm curious what you find to be under-featured about ios the reliability arguments were far stronger in 2010, but still persist today. android has gotten better, but it's not at the level of ios. never used a windows tablet or phone for more than a few minutes, so i can't comment. seemed fine just looking at the variety of tablets out there right now, the only reason i'd buy a non-apple device is either at the sub $200 level or if i needed something like a surface pro bad luck then, but i'm sure apple support helped you out i have had crashes on ios over the years, some combination of low storage space, badly coded apps, or something cause springboard to reset. i've had android devices brick themselves on more than one occasion, leaving me without a phone until i could get a replacement sorry about the derailment, OP!
Southend DSG are rebranding at the moment to dixons carphone. Could be why it's perma-shut. I know it's a way of checking out the different types on offer but I certainly wouldn't buy from them. If you were to walk around all the phone shops in Sarf-end, you'd get a similar sample of whats on offer from PC World. There's new models coming out soon from Apple, HTC, NVidea and the like - how much is the cash burning a hole in your pocket?
In the end I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. The final choice was between that and a Sony Experia Z2 but the high resolution AMOLED screen did it for me. After having a chat with the Subscription service at the Daily Telegraph I've saved about £30 a month by going for the Digital rather than Complete Pack. While it gives access to about 90% of the normal paper it also gives free access to the full website so I can read any missed articles or features there. I'm extremely pleased with it and the wife wants her own now. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
