Intel slapped with another patent infingment - this time for that bleeding edge processor , the PII! This from el Reg:

A little-known Canadian computer company has sued Intel for alleged intellectual property violation. All Computers claims the Pentium II contained circuitry for which it owns the right. Furthermore, it says, Intel does not have permission to use said circuitry.

All currently has two patents filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, both entitled 'Apparatus and method for enhancing the performance of personal computers' and both centering on adjusting the clock speed of "an accelerator board for use in replacing the microprocessor of a slow speed system board with a microprocessor operating at a higher clock speed".

All claims that the Pentium II uses techniques outlined in the patents - 5,450,574 and 5,506,981 - to synchronise a processor's clock with the chipset's system clock.

Crucially, the technique allows CPU clocks to operate at fractional multiples of the system clock rather than whole-number multiples.

Umm, AMD only has x86 processors because they sued Intel.

Really? :eeek: no ****! I spose x86 tech was ibm based originally so at a guess was it an anti-monopoly suit?

Id be supprised if a firm 10 years out of business gets anywhere with this lawsuit.

Intel and AMD have, to some extent, free range over each other's patents. AMD can freely use the technology behind some of Intel's developments the same way Intel is free to use AMD's 64 bit architecture. The fact of the matter is that both companies, like Microsoft and Apple, are thieves from idea whore companies like IBM and Xerox. If IBM and/or Xerox had _any_ frickin clue what they were doing with patents and copyrights, we'd be using StarOS x.xx and having a bunch of parallel RISC CPUs (and most likely, much faster computers). Oh well.

If you're an Intel fanboy, don't be.

If you're an AMD fanboy, don't be.

They're all thieves. :) Just buy the best for the money and you've got it made!
